The pic attached is of my toady. He's been like this for several days now and the cap looks like it's gone white but I can't tell if it's dying, dead, or just shedding. Would someone chime in on what to do? If he's dying I can at least try fragging it and hoping something survives. I don't want toxins knocking out the rest of my healthy tank. :sad2:

Thanks.

Well I'm guessing the rotten smell would be something really pronounced? My smeller isn't as good as it used to be. :hmm5:

I took it out and put it in a little specimen holder last night just in case but the cap had really turned white shortly after that. Guess I'll check tonight and maybe frag it to see if something is recoverable if all else fails. Hate to do that though.

Thanks Miranda

Just leave it as is. As wireefman suggested, a bit higher flow might help things along. Don't put it directly in front of a powerhead, but decent flow will help shed some of the stuff peeling off of it.

i would hit it with a turkey baster to get that loose stuff of and then put it in a high flow area, I would hold off on the frag

Thanks much for the advice and help everyone but unfortunately he's gone to that great reef in the sky. When i had moved him to a higher (but not direct) flow area and when I returned yesterday, the majority of the cap and stalk were just mush so I pulled him out and trimmed it back to the rock. I left a little piece on so maybe another will come back.

I'm still not sure what caused his demise as all the other corals and fish/inverts are fine. He was the only leather out of SPS and LPS corals if that made a difference but wasn't close enough to be stung by any of the others.

sometimes leathers can slump over and it may take a few days to a week before standing back upright, epseically when moved to a new tank/system

i would leave it and just make sure it is not melting away/falling apart
