I need to buy a better camera. I have a few pics but I am waiting for Part 2 of the package to be shipped. Can't wait to see what Surprise's Richard sends.
I will try to get some pics then.

Short but pretty...

Short but pretty...

So why would my post be funny? As far as the sponges are concerned most people have reported poor success in keeping them along with the barnacles and tunicates. The reason is that it is difficult to provide sufficient nutrients to keep them happy and still provide good water parameters.

Very true.....sponges are a short lived creature...a year is a long time to keep one......as are all filter feeders in a reef tank.....but they are so pretty, and filter feeders are all a plus for a reef tank.....enjoy while you have them....as sooner or later...everything in a reef tank passes on.

There have been folks that have kept certain ones for years...but is a mystery to me, as they require so much filter food, is very hard to replicate that from the wild to your tank.....when I feed squid to my system, you can see them open up and go for the squid juice....as microscopic as it is, gets their attention...as well as gorgonians, and all other filter feeders...but feeding them enough is the quandary....

I still have 90% of the sponges that came with my first order 2 years ago, I feed reef chili daily... well nightly honestly, about 2 hours after lights out. Mixxing it with clam juice and or tuna juice works very well :) just make sure you don't use tuna in oil....PLEASE.

You Sir are amazing.....you need to spread the word on your sponge success....anything over a year is "Expert" status..on many types of sponges, especially red/orange tree.......

I forget...how big is your tank?

I would be interested in what you feed them as I watched them slowly whither away. What type of tuna juice and clam juice? Also how large is your tank? Are you using a skimmer? How much do you feed?

I definately wouldn't call it expert anything LMAO! I have a 28g jbj nanocube with a 150w HQI. I use a tunze 9002 skimmer I guess the only thing I do diffrently than most people is leave the skimmer off for an hour after feeding, all pumps in the back are off as well (chiller pump, return pumps, reactor pumps.. anything that draws water to the back). Basically the only thing running are 2 k2 powerheads. I do this so my SPS have plenty of time to feed before it gets filtered out.

Feeding: once per day either frozen food or pellets for the fish and LPS.

and once per day, clam or tuna/fish juice (no name brand just the stuff left over from thawing frozen food) and if I don't have any I just use ro/di and let it soak for an hour before feeding. the dry foods I use for the filter feeders and coral is reef chili and cyclopeeze mix.

The Cyclo is the reason for letting it sit and soak otherwise that stuff just floats away.

I'm doing my tank with vodka now. I'm hoping the sponges will thrive with the extra bacterial load in the water.

If you could keep us updated on this, that would be great...

I've been dosing vinegar for about 8 months now, and the rate of withering on the one sponge I have left has definitely slowed, but I wouldn't say I've got it to the point of thriving, by any means.

I also wonder about the lighting... Richard I know the water on your site is usually turbid (nutrient rich) but how much light do these sponges get in the wild? Are they on top of the rocks in direct light, or underneath overhangs in the shade?

I'd like to try sponges one more time, but before I do I want to have a decent shot at success.

jdegrasse, sorry for the hijack ;)

No worries on the highjack -- I'm wondering the same thing!

I have a JBJ 28g. I'm running ChemiPure Elite as my carbon. So before I began the vodka series I ripped all equipment apart and cleaned them and I also vacuumed out the sump area.

After 11 days my nitrates and phosphate dropped dramatically (I did one wc during the period). Algae growth on the glass has slowed noticeably. No affect on sponges yet -- I imagine it is too soon.

BTW, I love the amount of copepods that bloom in the LR/LS. I made a pile of shells in the corner and its like a perpetual feeder for the fish.
