Another SCWD MOD

I got it free from a local reefer who got out of the hobby, so I'm not sure.
He gave me two, one working, one not, and I opened both of them up today.
Not sure if they work again, yet. I couldn't get the can of ABS cement open, and have to wait for my husband to come home.
Quite embarrassing!
Everything else it cut and sanded and ready to be glued.

Don't sweat it. Everytime I get a new can of ABSor PVC cement, I have to use a pair of channel locks to get it started. I don't have trouble with anything else. And I am normaly the 'goto' guy for opening a jar around here.
I'm glad to hear it wasn't just my weak disposition!
My husband *did* have to get out the pliers.
I just tested the SCWD that wasn't working before, and it's back to doing it's job!
I didn't need to make a replacement drum so far, since both drums were in perfect condition. In my case, it was the calcium in the gears that stopped it cold. I had it in vinegar for a week, when it was still closed up, but that apparently didn't do enough to get it working.
Once the gear box was out and opened up, I guess the vinegar could really reach every nook and cranny, and all the calcium chips could be rinsed out.

BTW, I didn't have a dremel, and just sawed off the top of the SCWDs with a hacksaw.

And now back to setting up the 120G that has been sitting dry until now (am still working to get all the equipment together).
Once the plumbing is connected and a hole for the external pump drilled in the arylic sump, it should be ready for the leak test.

I used my miter saw. Very easy and the cut was very straight. Very little sanding required to flatten and remove the burrs

Yep this is definately their weak point.
I bought it new and tested it on the kitchen sink. It worked perfectly.
I didn't have time to install it for about 3 months (after the warranty had expired). I don't know what happened to it in between, but when I got around to installling it, water only came out one side. The drum wouldn't spin. I was pretty ticked. Lucky for my I found this thread!
Even with warranty service, it would have cost me more to ship it back to them than this mod cost me.

So what do you do if the gear breaks? It seems that is the only indespenisble part, and that is what broke on mine while trying to unjam the drum...

Thanks to all for taking the time to post pictures on this thread... my first scwd arives in four weeks... it's good to know how to mend it if it goes wrong!
One question... I see most of problems seem to be from calcium build-up... do you guys all run calcium reactors, or has anyone had these problems with no additives, just regular waterchanges?
