I'm glad to hear it wasn't just my weak disposition!
My husband *did* have to get out the pliers.
I just tested the SCWD that wasn't working before, and it's back to doing it's job!
I didn't need to make a replacement drum so far, since both drums were in perfect condition. In my case, it was the calcium in the gears that stopped it cold. I had it in vinegar for a week, when it was still closed up, but that apparently didn't do enough to get it working.
Once the gear box was out and opened up, I guess the vinegar could really reach every nook and cranny, and all the calcium chips could be rinsed out.

BTW, I didn't have a dremel, and just sawed off the top of the SCWDs with a hacksaw.
