Another Sick Clownfish Thread - internal parasite possibly

Hey guys, so I went against my better judgment and bought a healthy looking false percula clown form the LFS (those in the SF bay area: do not buy fish from there!) I had previously bought two clowns from the same store, and they died after a week or two because of what appeared to be an internal parasite (sluggish, erratic behavior, random bursts of shaking/swimming, stringy white feces, rapid labored breathing).

To save one, I had tried giving it a freshwater bath after it hadn't eaten for a week, didn't really help, and it died the next day. The other one died shortly thereafter on its own.

So now I've got another nano tank, and thinking that the LFS had changed their ways, I got another clown. It started out super healthy, eating flake, pellets, frozen. After about two weeks, however, it started showing similar signs as the clownfish from before, and I was hoping to cure it before it died. I got some medicated food from the LFS (prazi), but it wouldn't eat it. After a few days, it stopped eating, and I was sure it wouldn't make it.

After a week, however, it actually started eating flake again, and after a few more days, it was eating more and more flake. It still refuses to eat the medicated food and has the same symptoms (stringy feces, rapid breathing), but it actually looks like its recovering on its own.

I will continue to try to feed it the medicated food every now and then, but for now, I'm just surprised that it's recovering on its own.

Should I continue down this path and just hope that it recovers on its own, or is medication via QT tank necessary?

Also I learned that the LFS doses the fish tanks with copper, which explains how the fish there don't show signs of disease.

I don't think so...my health clown at home usually has thicker feces with a little green color in it, but I suppose that depends on their diet. They are definitely thicker when healthy though, rather than long and mucous-y stringy...

Good news! Looks like the clown actually got through the ordeal and is nearly completely healthy again. He has a crazy appetite and is eating anything I put in there, including the medicated food as long as its crushed up to bite-size. His breathing looks normal, and his feces are solid.

I thought internal parasites were lethal, but I guess its possible that the fish, in a healthy environment can actually recover and possibly expel it with its own immune system?

that is great to hear. so far i have seen no clownfish actually recover from this white stringy poo infection, let it be parasite or bacterial. I have lost one clown and still trying to help my other fight against this horrible thing.

Yeah I've lost a few clowns to that condition, so it was surprising to me...it's still alive and well. I think the key was maintaining pristine water quality, stressing the fish as little as possible, and when it's finally well enough to eat, feed it anti-parasitic food (mine had praziquantel).

Just bumping an old thread as i found this searching for internal parasite symptoms....any update on your clown? Hope to hear good news...i think i have a false percula with the same issue...had no idea about the white stool issue till today...thought it was normal but my clown hasn't been eating well the last 2 days...swims great..looks fine..just not eating well..want to try and nip this in the bud.

thanks for the update! GREAT to hear...i sat in 1hr of traffic to get to my LFS...the guy there gave me some live brine shrimp and added some selcon to the bag...just got home and put some in with the clown...fingers crossed....prayers being said....i need to try and NOT feed for at least 24hrs from now...the water is pristine so i hope the odds are on my side..the video was adorable!!!
