I have a 30 breeder with the same lights as my display. I keep a bit of sand in there - when it stops binding phosphate after a few years, I change it all out over the next few months.
I do my dips in a viewing portal thingy... with the clear bottom. This way, I can look for pests easier that fell off in a dip when I shine a flashlight up from the bottom.
