another water change question

I was changing about 10% every week in my new reef tank. All the advice I got was don't do that. I am a water change freak I do 50% every week in all my FW, anyway, now if i wait and do 10% every 2 weeks my nitrates go up to close to 10. Should I go back to every week? Then my trates were barely registering.....

nothing wrong with 10% weekly changes imo, im astonished you were given lots of advise saying it wasnt a good idea

Nothing wrong with 10% weekly. I personally do 15% weekly.

stick with what works for you. More frequent smaller water changes will be better for your system than less frequent larger ones. It helps keep the water more constant in all respects, and if something works for you, don't change it just cause some people tell you to. I use Purple-Up (here comes the comments!), and i've heard over and over how this product is so bad and does nothing for you. I can't believe the amount of coraline algae in my tank! All my water parameters are stable and at excellent levels using this product, so i'm not going to stop

Same here. I do 10% weekly, or 20-25% bi weekly.

You need to find the source for those nitrates to eliminate them completely. The water changes are good with or without the nitrates. Try to cut down on feedings. Keep all filter socks, sponges, and pads clean. I clean mine twice a week. Use a turky baster or powerhead to blow out all cracks and crevices of your LR. I do this at least once a month during a WC then try to siphon out most of the junk floating.

You know I never even thought of the sponge in my sump! I'll give it a good rinse.

I try to swap out all my socks twice a week. I have a few backups and i take out one and swap with a nice clean dry one. Sometimes I only do this once a week but when you wash it and see all the crap come off youll understand why you need to do it so often.

You can remove all sponges and filter socks if you want to. If you have enough flow and a powerful enough skimmer, those things are not needed
