another wavebox question

I'm wondering if I can make this work:

I want to build a 6' x 6' x 2' display with a 12" x 12" overflow directly in the middle.

I was thinking of putting a wavebox on each side of the overflow and have two run for about an hour and then the other two run for about an hour back and forth. Thus there would be a wave running side to side for an hour and the front and back for and hour, so on and so forth. Would this work? With two sets of WBs in the center of the tank facing out?

TIA,

It will not work unless your wavebox mount on one of the side panel. With that size of tank you will need the minimum of 1 wavebox and 2 extension. If you decided to put the wavebox in the middle, you will not see any wave because the distance is too short..

I was thinking that the timing of the pumps would have to be a bit different than normal but I really thought this might fly. Let me know if I'm crazy:

Right pump starts a wave to the right --- it bounces of the right wall of the tank --- comes back to the center of the tank --- the left pump kicks on and pushes the wave more --- the wave hits the left wall --- bounces back to the center of the tank --- the right pump kicks on again --- so on and so for.

I hope this helps. Could it work like this?

If not I think I still might go with four boxes, one on each side of the tank, two running at a time, but I guess I'll still run into the same problem of the tank being too wide and not enough push from one side at a time. If that makes any sense.

Now that I think about it what your saying, it makes a lot of sense. I really didn't want to have anything on the side of the tank but I may have to rethink my aquascaping or give up the wave box idea.

Thanks,

I would use one side of the tank to add an external wavebox like the one in the picture below. You don't have to make 4 small boxes for the 4 pumps. You can make a larger box to house two pumps. My tank has 2 boxes of 12x6x13.

That's a good idea, I really wanted to have all four sides completely visible. I guess I need to give that idea up or go with something other than WBs. Do you have a lot of overflow noise?

 as you can see my tank sitting on the floor. I have no durso pipe install and the water lever is not high enough. It will be quiet when i have the water level higher and durso pipe in place...

Makes sense, what tunzes are you using? The same the WB uses? I take it they're all running in-sync together on the same controller? Give me a list of what equipment exactly you used if you can.

Thanks,

Hello Nick: here is my equipment list

4 tunze 6261 pumps Part #6261.000 $342.68
4 Blue sponge (sound damper) Part # 6212.300 $10.78 each
4 Oring Part #6250.510 $6.34
Y adapter Part #7092.340 $43.45
Tunze 6091 wave controller Part # 6091.000 $97.69

Sweet! Thanks Steve, I maybe going back now toward the exact same dimensions as you but Starphire and rimless. I'm thinking of doing small overflow/tunzebox thing but internal rather than external.

BTW, do you have a build thread going? Also, you planning to use anything else for circulation other than the returns and WBs. I'm slightly worried about having a detritus buildup on the far end. Maybe a couple tunzes on the opposite end to push stuff towards the overflow when the WBs are off?

Nick... I am going to have 18 tunze pumps running in my tank :D. My plan is to have 8 tunze nano stream 6055 run on the bottom. I will post some picture as i start to work on the mounting and the way to hide all the wires. I will have 4 tunze 6305 flow on top, 4 tunze wave boxes and 2 tunze master circulation return and feed the prop tank.

Are you sure you want to do the same size tank as mine with rimless? Your glass will be at least 1" thick to be able to handle all the pressure. I like glass tank but for large size tank i prefer acrylic. The only company i would go with for glass tank rimless is AGE. But it will be EXPENSIVE

Its a bit of a scary gamble but GlassCages will built 8' long rimless tanks. They use 3/4" starphire and from the couple I've seen seem to be holding up well. One guy actually has wave boxes running on his, which is encouraging, as its holding up to the wave as well.

18 tunzes, wow!

The quote I got from AGE was going to be 3/4" as well as Elos, Miracles won't build it. The AGE price was more than double the CGs and Elos of course was about 4 times more. Of course this is without shipping. Fortunately, CGs delivers to STL for about $50. Most of the guys here (well in STL, you can see where I'm at currently, look left  ) that have large tanks go with CGs and have never had any real issues. I'd love to have the PVC bottom , the extra cost of the tank doesn't bother me as much as the shipping.

I've got over a year worth of planning left to sort it all out.

Are you going BB? and/or planning to use nano rocks for the 6055s?

Hey Steve the more I look at you the video the more I'm like "wow that just to much of a wave for me and my rimless tank" :) What size wave should I expect with just two WBs setup the same way?

Also, are you in anyway worried about your EuroBrace? I've seen way too many with sharp corners like yours crack :( Although, they were 30" high tanks so I think you should be set. Still, I'd prefer a wider arch at the corners of the euro if it was me.

Don't mean to worry you. I'm sure you have it all covered

Nick, glass cages isn't bad. I have talk to them before i order my tank. Their price pretty much the cheapest even with 3 side starphire. My tank will have a SSB for them wrasses. No nano rock for the pump either.

You should get 2" of wave with just 2 wavebox in the same size tank. I use 4 because of my curiosity :D. As for the brace i did mention it to the builder couple time but he told me not to worry about it. The tank build with 1" acrylic all around.

On the side note. Are you still in Afghanistan? Look like we are having the same job just different branch of service...

Yeah, I actually just got to Farah about three days ago. We're working SECFOR for a PRT. We just spent about two months at Bragg for MOB. I'm with the Illinois Army National Guard now but used to be a paratrooper in the regular army.
