Another...your tank can be dangerous thread.

So, yesterday I was mucking around in my sump and sliced my thumb on the glass divider that I was to lazy to round off when I built the sump. Almost deep enough for a stich or 2. I dosed it in peroxide because of this thread. I want to keep my thumbnail! :D Hurt like a you know what!

you know honestly, i dont wear gloves, i tried doing the whole "use a barrier of protection" and tried a ziploc bag for some protection, man it was a pain in the arse, i wont do it again, although i do have to say 2/5 times i get cut by one of those razor thin micro-creatures that live on the LR, feels like a splinter going into my skin, or a shard of glass, yeah those hurt, but never bothered to use anything other than soap and water, when i first started reading this thread, i thought it was a joke.... then i saw the thread-starters pictures and i was like whoaaaa bottom line, use some sort of protection, and if your not going to (im likely not to even after this post) wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap VERY WELL afterwards!!! :)

*Off - Topic* BUT, what are those d@mn things that live on LR that feel like very small pieces of broken glass when they stick you? I know they have to have a name!

That might be what they are. I sold a large amount of LR a while back and the stuff was covered in something that hurt whenever I grabbed the rock. Most of it washed out right away but some stayed in for a while like glass shards or fiberglass embedded in the skin.

Yeah, this weekend I'm going to drop the water level and use my handy dandy roto-tool to sand it down. I had the roto tool when I made it, I WAS just lazy, and paid for it.:rolleye1:

That sounds like bristle's from a bristle-worm... They are small, glasslike, and look like fiberglass to me too. The Forameriferan's are small little reddish nodule's that grow on the LR. As 3_hi_lo said, Dr. Ron's got some good pics on his website.

I did have the TINIEST of cuts on my the tip of my thumb BEFORE I started working in the tank.
Some organism/toxin/etc must have entered thru there.
I wasn't bitten or stung by anything that I can tell.

what kind of corals you got? paly's?
