do you have any zoanthids? they secrete a toxin similar to botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin is the strongest toxin in the world and it could have gained access through your already aquired cut. For example the strongest manmade toxin, dioxin, is 1000X weaker than botulinum and we all saw what it did to the pres of ukraine...
But i dont think that is what you had, what you described is text book bacterial infection and the antibiotic you were given (the spelling is rocephin) is a fairly powerful one.
ALso, i second what swedge stated...not all bacteria are compliant
So take it easy on the poor docs

Sean, is the nail bed intact (the part you dont normally see underneath the cuticle)? If it is, the nail might be salvaged if not, it might as well come off and start over again.
It looks narly, but those kind of injuries really turn me on. Yeah, I am a sicko but love taking care of those in my local ER.

After the first problem (the infection) one of the Doc's told me that the nail matrix was ok.
I don't know after this injury.
TBH, if it grows back it's cool, if not it's still cool.
How many reefers can say they almost died and are permanently scarred from the hobby? :bum:

Sean, I'd think that the matrix or nail plate would be fine from the infection (judging from the picture and your posts). However with blunt force trauma such as this, things change.
Oh, and this probably goes without saying, but I wouldn't put that thumb back in the tank for awhile.
That was mean, I know. You just want to make sure the plate was disrupted so you can have a normal nail when as it grows. Or you will look like one of those old fishermen with tangled digits, and that aint cool.

I just got some coralife gloves. Occasionally, I still find myself dipping my hand in the tank to rearange dislodged coral or more likely overgrowths of hair algae currently or even the veggie clip for the tangs. However, during planned events I do use the gloves. I have a fluval on my 29 and I especially use the gloves to rinse the sponges clean due to previous encounters with bristle worms hidding in there.

Wow, this thread is an old old OLD one, I remember when it started. Sean, without me having to read 14 pgs of random msgs...
1) Did they ever diagnose M. marinum? Did they suspect another infection of that wound? I remember the comments about rocephin.
2) Did you ever see Moondog's post about what he went through? Had a lot of sequelae/complications after a bout with known Mycobacterium infection.
