Anthias - Ulcerous Wounds

Grizzled & Cynical
Unabashed anthias fan here, with more than is probably advised in my tanks. Been seeing a fairly high incidence of what I can only describe as 'ulcerous wounds' appearing in QT. Much more frequently lately than in the past. Anyone got any clever thoughts on what, and why? My initial thought was uronema, but it doesn't seem to spread that aggressively, and does respond in about 50% of the cases to antibiotics. Strange.

Well if it's responding to antibiotics I guess you could rule out uronema?

I've seen this a lot when anthias are released from the mandatory 7 day quarantine we have for imported fish. Used to happen a lot with some species. Would start with a brownish red circular patch which would ulcerated within 48 hours and the fish would be dead within another two or three days. Interestingly, these fish continued eating up until the very end. Used to wonder whether it was uronema or bacterial.

Then I experienced it a few years ago with local flavo in quarantine. The shop only had two, and I saw the brownish circular blotch on one fish but took them both anyway. My qt has very high water quality, but this did not stop the affected fish from quickly developing an ulcer. It was dead two days later but it had stopped eating and had gone into hiding once the ulcer erupted. Meanwhile the other fish developed a reddish brown patch, but was still eating. I fed it antibiotic soaked DIY mix which it readily ate. The patch never erupted into an ulcer. My guess was for these flavo the problem was likely bacterial as I don't think this fish would have survived without treatment.

These days I keep an eye out for any hint of systemic problems and would either dose with a gram negative antibiotic or give it soaked meaty food (if its eating well).

Not sure if that helps... But good luck with whatever you decide to do.
