I am thinking about getting a bulk order of high grade carbon- It's 55lbs for about $75 so I was thinking of splitting it with someone if anyone is interested....

Cool- I figured if we could get three people it would only be like $25 a person for 18lbs each....pretty could deal for high quality stuff....

how big would a 75# bag be? I have a 5 gallon bucket full and it can't weigh more than 20#

I know of a few chronic users out there....

How did I know you'd find that one Matt?!?

Randy uses Marineland Black Diamond (because it's good and because he runs his in a canister filter and Black Diamond is Bituminous with a larger hardness/abrasion number). Even though Lignite is the best under most circumstances, it will crumble and create dust if ran in a canister.

I would make sure you get more info from the manufacturer before you buy.

For instance,

Is it Bituminous coal, Sub-Bitumous coal, Lignite, or Anthracite coal?
Are the mesh sizes available, U.S. Standard or Tyler Standard?
What is the Iodine number? (Not really useful except to determine if it's air phase or Liquid phase)
What is the Molasses number?
What is the Methyline Blue number?
What is the Hardness (or abrasion) number. This is important if you are putting it in a canister filter or fluidized bed.
Is this produced here or is it a cheap Chinese import? (The Chinese crap will be ultra dusty. To add insult to injury, it is often made of Anthracite as opposed to Bituminous or Lignite making it pretty much worthless for our purposes).
Is it Air-phase or Liquid-phase? (I know that most people think that as long as it isn't pelletized, it's liquid-phase. That's not true. Many granulars are also air-phase. It all depends on whether it's macroporous or microporous).

Curt I'm guessing Randy has already tested that,

Kent do you have the link to Randy's thread about the Carbon?

I want to run carbon but want to find a way to run a big canister gor the Media, I just don't know how much is enough, and how much is to much.

Curt I'm guessing Randy has already tested that,

It's possible but if that's the case, why doesn't he use it himself?

Regardless, here's what concerns me about this wholesaler. Carbon is sold by those numbers (Iodine, molasses, hardness, etc) and this link doesn't include ANY info except mesh size and they don't even state whether it's US mesh size or Tyler mesh size. I don't get a warm, fuzzy feeling when I see that.

From the link (but without a link to RHF's comments):

This carbon was approved by someone I consider to be a major guru on the topic here on the boards, and with some research through the chem. forums you'll get an idea who I may be referring to.

Ummm...LOL. Randy goes to Bill (Boomer) always whenever a Carbon question comes up.

From one of Randy's posts yesterday (including the link).

I use Marineland Black Diamond. I wouldn't buy generic carbon, but if it provides details it may be suitable.

I'm not trying to ruin this group-buy. Actually, I'm trying to save you guys some money. I'm basically saying exactly what RHF is saying....get the details. This might be the deal of the century or you might be flushing your money down the toilet. I don't have a clue because I don't have those important numbers. Without them, no one has a clue.
