Hello reefers,
I went reefing this past weekend and found an assortment of stuff!!!

I found some Atlantic Sea Nettle jellyfish, pipefish, shoal grass, cleaner shrimp, sanddollars, small whelks, crabs, nasarrius snails, seaweed, and sea slugs. I found one area where I can collect some of this stuff, but I'm not going to drive down there if no one wants anything. There was even a sea snake that swam in between my husbands' legs. I caught atleast one of each of these items and have included pictures.

Please note that I am simply a reefer who had fun catching all this stuff. I put all this stuff in a 60qt cooler, so I really didn't take alot. I am not going to open up a store, set up vasts amounts of aquariums in my house to sell, sell on ebay, ship around the world, etc...If I have enough interest, I will sell these items as it will cost us money to do this, but I'm not looking to make a fortune off this. This is the aquarium that all these critters are in (first set up):

I'm am looking to do this w/in a month.

where I found these jelly fish, the current was very fast flowing, rough so I wasn't afraid of my low flowing powerhead bothering it and the corners-I don't see what the issues are. I've heard that too, but mine are doing well in the aquarium they are in.

Maybe it's a sales pitch trying to get you to buy some over priced tank or something. I don't know. I don't see any issues.

I thought collecting pipefish was illegal.

Nassarius snails are great addition to any reef tank. A whelk on the other hand may eat what you don't want him to. Some whelk feeds on snails and some on corals, too. Do you know what kind of sea slugs you have? They are very specific to what they eat. A lot of them don't do well. However, if you have caulerpa eating sea slugs or algae eating sea hares, I bet some people will definitely want some :).

where were these collected? Off Alabama coast may be too temperate to survive long term in most reef tanks. I agree with Tomoko on the sea hares and slugs, if you could ID them you'd prob get some interest in those. A sand dollar might be cool to have, but seems like you'd have to have a large surface area of substrate for them.
Some whelks will eat perfectly healthy clams too.

tomoko: in regards to the pipefish-I collected just a few handfuls of shoal grass. seeing a pipefish in a bay is next to impossible. It wasn't until I put the grass into the tank that I realized I had it. I had this same species a few years back when I had seahorses, so it was very familiar looking to me. so, if it is illegal, I don't know I'm sure you're right. it wasn't something I got on purpose. Concerning the sea slugs-the lights are out right now so I can't take any pics, but I found this website and the two I have look just like this:

I found them washed up on the beach on the Gulf, not the brackish water where everything else I found was. I put them into my frag tank as I didn't want the jellyfish to hurt them. My frag tank is quite infested w/ HA and they've been chowing down all day.

toytek: they were collected off the FL coast in brackish water. I think the website I found on the sea slugs looks dead on. The few whelks I found are very small, I didn't intentionally get those either. I know they are bad for reefs that's why they are in this tank. They were hitchhiking in the shoal grass.

I got two small jellyfish. One JF looked rough from the getgo. He is still alive, but I don't think he's gonna make it. The other one though is looking great. I threw some pellets in today to feed all the snails, checked in a few hours later and you could see the pellets in his body. So he's already eaten!

thanks for your comments and concerns ;)
