Any master wood workers out there?

I am getting ready to make the doors for the stand and hood for my new tank. I figured I would drop a line out there to see if anyone has the equipment to make raised panel doors. If you do and you are intrested in assisting me. Please send me a PM so we can discuss it.

Thanks,

Mike C

When I built my stand, I ordered raised panel doors from Baird Lumber in Canfield. Doors were solid oak made to my dimensions (18 x 24) & were only $20 a piece. That was probably two years ago. I couldn't beat it.

I saw some on ebay that were solid wood for around $20 to $25. I was checking aquarium stands and they also sold doors. I will check if I still have the site.

Hi Mike,

There is a place call Building 9 in downtwon Akron on Main street that sell just cabinet doors plus a lot of other building materials.

I just ordered doors from Baird Brothers Sawmill today in fact. oak doors run $15-$20.00/sq.ft. depending on size. That place is something else, it is huge. They have all kinds of molding , trim, doors, mantles , flooring. (Bairdbrothers.com) I recommend them if you decide not to build you own. They are at a 3 week lead time right now though. The 4 doors I ordered were $200.00 with hinges in place w/ 5/8" overlay. Just my thoughts.

Order them, if you dont have the raise panel bits $200+ ,a strong 1/2" router $100+, and Jointer $500 its not worth it. You cant ussally buy the stock for the doors for how much you can buy them made for and they will be square and flat (the biggest issue when making doors)

Got these two for $100 delivered online 25"x21"

I built my stand. I did columns and alot of trim work on it. I did not even want to tackle the doors.

Mike I would hardly call myself a master but skillled yes...And I myself would have to agree with the asses due to the time and effort and the unreliable sources for lumber you would be better off farming it out to a cabnet shop ...... will end up being nicer and cheaper in the long run for sure .....Just my 2 pennies worth ..

I have been contacted by a club member that has the resources to handle the production of the doors. I plan to give it a shot with his assistance. We are working out the details on how we will handle this. Thanks to everyone for your responses.

Just pay Barry (Akronviper) to make it for you ;). I saw his stand and wanted to take it home with me. Either that or offer to set his tank up for him and he might do it for free :).

One of the members who was on the C-SEA board a few years ago and lives in Hinckley near you did remarkable wood working on his stands. I also liked the work of the cabinet shop in Bay Village, (near E. Oviatt and Dover Center Rd.) but haven't been by there in years, so I don't even know if they are still around.

Buying the doors or having them made sounds like a good idea to me. Yes this kind of work could be done with hand tools without sinking thousands into a power work shop, but :hammer: :reading: lots of skills to be acquired first and it is not many people's cup of tea.
