Any mechanics out there? Im a metal worker but I just took a position on the diesel mechanic fabrication team. Some days my hands are covered in everything from grease to hydrolic fluid. Im paranoid of residues even after washing my hands several times. What do you all do to make sure your not introducing any contaminents to your tank?

Start wearing latex gloves while doing any dirty work. If your using an abrasive soap you should be good enough. I also find that doing the dishes by hand really gets the tough stuff off.

I wear gloves all the time. Scrub good with hand cleaner and use dish soap then rinse really good!!!!
A friend of mine does hvac and had kerosene on his arms and put his hands in his tank when he got home and didn't wash good... The next morning everything was dead! Fish, inverts and most corals. He had to start from scratch!!!

Many moons (40+ years) ago, when I was a mechanic we used a barrier cream before working and then rinsed off with regular soap and water. Don't know if is still available. But I still work on my own cars, and for clean up afterwards I use "Pink Solution" made in West Van, B.C. ( Look up on internet.) It has all sorts of uses around the house as well (dog and cat pee on the carpet) . I bought a 5 litre tub 10 years ago and am still useing it. After rinsing off, I wash with regular soap and water

Actually, if you can't wash it off or rinse it off with salt water, it won't come off in the tank either.

My hands never go in the tank without putting something like these on first. They are made from nitrile. It's not only better for your livestock, but it's better for you too. You can find them on Amazon for around $10 to $15 a pair and they last a LONG time. I've been using the same pair for 6 months and they show no signs of wear. The fingers and palm are even textured to provide a nice grip.
