i got a larger tank and cant afford to upgradfe my skimmer, its a coral life rated for 100 gallon works k.......by the way im local and just stumbled across the club forum.........thanks for any input...
There are mods, but you'll have to search RC for them. Off the top of my head, I think that there is an overflow mod, to take surface skim into the skimmer first (or maybe it's just an addon piece) and then there is the meshmod that you can do on the CSS's pump. Again, I don't know anything about CSSes, but I've heard of those being done on them. You'd have to search for more info on it. Sry.
I also think it is not the volume of water, but the bioload that we need more info on. If you have a low bioload this may work well, if you have high bioload you may need to upgrade. at leat you have something for now though.
I used to have one. I cut off the molded 90 and ran 3/4 inch flex tubing straight from the pump to the inlet with stainless steel hose clamps to secure it. This increased the flow of both air and water and improved performance. Of course, this voids the warantee
The pump was in the sump and the skimmer outside. A dangerous combination with this skimmer, as it's prone to overflowing at any moment. I suggest running it in your sump if you can. Despite what the instructions say, I got best results when keeping the water level just above the red collar, below the taper in the foam tower and well below the collection cup. Otherwise, you're asking for trouble.
Try using the skimmer as is. You can run is a little wet to see if you pull more matter from water. Test the water and notice if the corals are doing well. Even if you are doing SPS corals, the Corallife will do the job just fine. If you plan to add SPS, use the skimmer, there are other parameters that can affect SPS negatively. Your tank load is not that much. I use an Octopus NW 150 on my 90 gallon since Nov. 2006. The unit cost under $180 shipped.
I was running the 220 with a gate valve, a larger pump with mesh mod, riser cut down, and put on a 1/2'' air intake. On a 22g nano I would not run on anything over 40g. there is a 65g, 120g and a 220g skimmer made by coralife cut what they say to 1/3 and that is the size of tank I would run it on. I thought this was a good skimmer with all the mods. untill I got a real skimmer. The 220 did good on my nano, but not on anything else.
