Any of the maxijet mods out now reliable?

I have one of the oldest maxijet mods that was sold at Premium aquatics. The impeller housing has never "clicked into" the maxijet body. I have it zip-tied on:/

Also, I've heard there are issues where some of them will reverse direction when restarted.

Are any of the newer ones good? Which?

Thanks!

I am thinking most of the people that were into the maxi mods switched to the korrilia powerheads as they were cheap and put out a ton of flow

Just checked F&S: 70$ is not cheap (at least to me), especially when you already own the maxijets so the mods are just a little extra cash.

Thats 70 bucks for one of the big boys other ones can be cheaper. plus not sure about not but when the original mj mods came out they were very unreliable and loud. I personally run tunze stuff but in the past ran mj mods (always issues) and korrilia. I would rather pay a few bucks more and get something reliable

the maxi jet mods they sell at arc work great they are cheap and i have beem running the m for about 2 years with no problems at all

gmneil, do you stop and restart yours often? Any troubles?

Oh, I see- I had only seen the regular versions, not the "nanos"... I was basically looking to add a sort of surge powerhead. Something I would put on a timer to come on a few times a day for only a few minutes. But, will obviously need something that doesn't have start-up issues like my current mj mod does (but it's old school, so thought i'd see if there were better ones.) Of course, I'd still prefer not to spend any real money, so a mj mod would have been nice...

Anyhow, for a surge, I think the lowest one I'd consider would be the evolution 1400- It's still expensive, $50.

Thanks,
Angela

I wouldnt suggest a korillia for constant on off either they do make one thats meant for it but its a ton more money

I have tried them all. the cost of the magnents to hold them brought the cost back up. I went with the K4s now running the K evelution 1400 on one of my tanks.

pet salutions has them on sale right now

I've been running the mod kit on a MJ 900 for around six months. I use my controller to stop and start my powerheads a couple times a day when I feed and haven't had any problems. In fact, I've been thinking of getting another one. I'm the one person out there who isn't fond of Koralias. I've tried one and it's range of motion was restricted, in my opinion. The flow from the modded MJ is considerable. The cost is so minimal that I recommend you try one and see for yourself. If you end up not liking it, you haven't lost much.

I already have one, that's the issue. It sucks. But, it's old, so one of the first generations. It has good flow, but cavitates with any power fluctuation, and chatters on start-up. I thought maybe this was fixed in the newest versions.

To address the constant stop start, we're talking a few times a day here. So, run for 10 minutes 3 x day for instance. Just something to change the flow up a bit, maybe stir up detritus that might be collecting somewhere.

Bottom line is get what you can afford. If the mod is it and you can recycle that old power head go for it. For 2 to3 times a day so what if it clicks. I do believe the new mods have a anti reverse built in I think. Check there web site.

I use a maxi 1200 with the mod. Probably an old version. I turn it on and off every 90 secs. Noisy but works ok. It's on a basement frag tank .I had trouble with one earlier on ; it wouldn't settle in and clattered . I added a quarter inch of airline tube over the metal shaft so it didn't bounce as much and it worked better but did reverse direction ocassionally.

On the displays I've had years of trouble free performance from the older korillia 4's linked to a Seio controller. This controller doesn't go on and off but slows and accelerates the attached power heads . By doubling them up I get 4 power heads to run off it handling two of the display tanks.

Thanks, guys. I ended up finding a Koralia Evolution 1400 at Big Al's for less than $40 and it says it can be used on a wavemaker. Yay! :D

I have the Algae Free md and it works pretty well. you have to make sure it's pretty deep in the tank to eliminate cavitation, but other than that, its pretty good. Marine Depot has them for less than $20

As far as magnets to hold it up, i've super glued the magnet mount that comes with the kit to a large Mag Float. no problems there

I'm probably going to get another for my new 65 g build

OK, this Koralia Evolution 1400 is awesome! So much so that I've decided to run it full-time and not worry about getting the closed loop back up (remember my broken Eheim 1262 impeller?) This thing is quiet, uses very little energy and produces a nice big diffuse flow.

Thanks guys, very pleased.

Modded maxijet handsdown for affordability and reliability. Put out a ton of flow compared to the koralias. Also, they never clog or have to be cleaned which is a huge factor to consider. High end pumps will make a massive dent in your wallet. I tried both and can't be happier with the maxijets..

I own that one too and if you put them side by side you will see/feel the difference. Frequent cleanings keeps me running for the hills as this will decrease the flow without you knowing. I use it on my freshwater tank where there's no algae or heavy feedings.
