Any Reef clubs in NYC ?

Manhattan Reef is not a club, its just a online community.

Unless your definition of a club is an online thing.. then eh... haha.

But if you're looking for a physical reef club that has meetings (in person haha)

NY Reef Club

Site - NYREEFCLUB.com

We are based in LI (Baldwin) & Queens (Ozone Park).

We've had a few meetings so far... great group of guys & gals.

Manhattan Reefs may be an internet site but you'll find great info on there, friendly people and they have the best Marketplace around and it's 24/7/365 if you want to find corals to buy/trade/sell.

Many of the members are also located in Brooklyn, so easy to purchase corals locally without going into Queens.

Plus there are no dues like other 'clubs' in the immediate area. It's free to join :)

They also hold 2 gigantic 'Frag Swaps' per year (actually not a lot of swapping goes on there, but vendors come from all over to sell there!!) that NOTHING else locally can compare to AND they are adding more member events where you can meet the cream of the crop of local reefers!

Do you really want to have to wait to go to a meeting once a month to buy some corals?

Manhattan Reefs frag swaps are not free however. There is an admission fee per person.

MR is a nice online community for the most part. Marketplace is great, thats for sure. But if you're looking to physically meet up with reefers then your choices are a bit slim.

Like stated before

Brooklyn Aquarium Society (but its mostly freshwater)
LIRA (wasn't stated before, but it may be a bit too far for you, its in Suffolk county)
NY Reef Club (with alternating locations in Baldwin, LI & Ozone Park, Queens

*Forgot to mention that NYRC will also hold TRUE swap events, no $$ required. Just bring a frag(s) of what you want to trade. Coral for coral.

I'm a member of LIRA (Long Island Reef Association) and I take the drive out there monthly. Great bunch of guys and gals.

Brooklyn Aquarium Society has reef topics frequently mixed with their fresh water topics. Lots of auction items.

NY Reef Club is a new club based in Ozone Park (borderline of bklyn) with monthly meetings set to be scheduled in all five boroughs.

ManhattanReefs.com is a similar to Reef Central with the majority of its members locally. They also have a marketplace loaded with people selling fish, coral, and equipment. Its bi-annual swap is one of the largest, with quality vendors and merchandise.

I'd try them all.
Happy reefing

Either of the places listed above are a great place to meet up with people and trade coral. I would check out MR first as alot of the club guys are on there. It would give you a good idea on what to expect from the other clubs in the area before you start dropping cash on membership fees. I've heard nothing but great things from both BRS and LIRA and know people that go to meetings from BRS and LIRA as well as post up on MR daily.

Also, contary to what staaan says, MR is a great place to meet people close to you and isn't limited to just online content. Shoot a PM to someone close and maybe visit and talk coral =0) Staan if you want I can hold your hand and take you places with me to meet people.

Tosiek, I never stated I had a hard time meeting people (contrary - I actually have met a ton) on Manhattan Reefs. All I stated is that its not a physical club. As the OP stated, he was looking for a club. To me a club is a physical thing in terms of place & people, not an internet gateway. I've met with plenty on MR, and I agree is a great starting point, especially if you're just starting out with this hobby.

But thanks for the offer Tosiek, I think I can manage my self.

I agree with Dr. Harry - you should try 'em all.

From my personal experience, LIRA was great but - geared more towards advanced reefers. And a bit too far from me (I live in Queens).

I've never been to Brooklyn Aquarium Society meetings but I've heard only good things. And if I'm not mistaken, I believe they have membership fees. Majority of clubs do due to food costs and possibly even bringing in guest speakers and a ton of other stuff I'm sure.

Anyway... all in all if you are in the Tri-State area, Manhattan Reefs is definitely a great place to start, but as I have found (along with a few friends) in this hobby, you're always left wanting more. Plus I find the club meetings pretty informative.

Brooklyn Aquarium Society turn 100 next month. You can't do any better than that when it comes to a pool of information and as the others said the auctions are great and many hobbiest bring in frags and other items for auction or trade. We also have some of the best guest speakers in the trade. I've been attending with my son for the past five years. Membership for a year is $20 but you can attend the first meeting as a guess and check it out. Drop by the 2nd Friday of the month at 7:30 tell them you were invited by me. I have a family membership. Sure you'll like it

Dave.
