Hi,

I have a 125G tank with one baby clown and a small hippo tang, and going to add a yellow tang pretty soon. I want to know if anyone knows any Angel fish that I can keep with these fish. Im looking for reefsafe ones.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

i have a flame angel and a flame back angel... since ive been feeding my fish better they have been staying away from my corals.

Most Coral Beauties are reef safe but they are dwarf size but have very good coloration.

I agree but the coral beauty is not 100 per cent safe.

genicanthus angels are the most reef safe you'll get.

I'm considering and acanthops for my tank.

I have a flame angel along with my Yellow and Hippo tangs. I've never had a coral nipping problem. However, from the start I have placed a nice green (they're fussy) romaine lettuce leaf along with nori in a clip. All three browse on it all day long. It gives them something to do. The angel seems satisfied to nibble that instead of corals. All three will go together to the 'salad bar' throughout the day.

Agreed.

I also have a Coral Beauty, and the coloration is magnificent. He has yets to bother any of my corals or tankmates. Good algae eaters too.

I would never say any angel is 100% reef safe, but as mentioned bellus and swallowtail angels are up there. Next would be the centrygope family, who all can nip, but I've had good luck with two of them in my 120, and then there is the large angel families who are likely to nip unless constantly fed.

I agree with ReefWreak that no angel is 100% safe, but I have had Coral Beautys and Lamarck in my tank prior to Ike and had no real damage to any corals from either of them. I don't have any angels currently but am considering adding a swallowtail or bellus.

I have another data point for you. I considered the same issues and ultimately bought a coral beauty. He (a) gets along well with my two tangs (yellow and kole) and (b) doesn't seem to nip at my LPS or soft corals at all.

I have a bellus angel, and I have never seen her nip at any of my corals. Also, I've had her for about 6 months now, and she has been an extremely healthy fish with a really cute personality. She even eats out of my fingers when I put food in the tank. One thing I have heard about the bellus is that since that are collected from deep waters you want to check to ensure that they are swimming normally (no swim bladder issues).

I had a coral Beauty for 2 years with no problems, but overnight
he started picking at corals. Destroyed a sps colony and took a likeing to a open brain. It wasn't fun removing him from a 125 with a ton of rock!

So to sum it up, here are the semi-reefsafe angel fish:

Genicanthus:
swallowtail (female)
zebra angel (male)
Bellus
Lamarck

And Coral Beauty

Thanks everybody for your input.

Genicanthus are generally considered reef safe, but there are exceptions. My zooanthids closed up after I got my Bellus. I started watching more closely and would find the Bellus picking at the zooanthids. I don't know if the fish was actually causing damage, but my poylps wouldn't open until I removed the bellus

I have a flame angel and yellow tang in the same tank. they pretty much ignor each other. My clowns on the other hand constantly charge at the Angel, but he's quick enough I've yet to see any damage to him. I have caught him occationally nipping the polyps on my toadstool. This is rare enough though that it's still doing fine.
