They are not particularly rare in their range, it's just that they have a restricted range.

I have heard that, but why don't we see more of them then? at these prices i could nearly justify leasing a yacht to go and collect a few hundred of them. Would have to release them slowly so as to not drive the price down, but even at a grand a piece it would probably be worth it.

I think the actual collecting is restricted. Could be wrong. Could be a straight up logistics issue that makes it difficult.

It could be like Clarion Angels. Clarion's are all over the place off the island in Mexico where they are endemic, but it's illegal to collect so.....and that's certainly an easy trip....

That's what they were priced around last year. It wasn't until this recent shipment that the price risen so dramatically.
