thanks,

Jeff

I know MichaelG was trying, I forgot if they were Begais though. He could be helpful finding a mated pair

I don't know about mine. might have 2 females??? no action in the past year. Though, when I had 5 one died every couple days until I had 2- but never saw aggression. Was weird, but I figured I had a pair- perhaps not.
Finding healthy wild caught ones can be difficult now from my understanding. There are internet sources that have them. If you end up with 2 males who beat the cr@p out of one another, we can try swapping. A small tank would be better for this- as you will need to catch them (though of any fish to catch- bangaiis are perhaps the easiest).

i was thinking about picking up 4-5, depending on the price, and where i get them. I was going to call something fishy after work, they seem to have the best deals on fish. From the reading i have done and heard they are terrible shippers, and a lot of them have parasites. I will definatly sway if need be. Did you buy them for breeding purposes?

I got them for free to be honest from Macna in DC. Try Inland Aquatics. I'm pretty sure they have captive bred fish. They tend not to have the same problems as wild caught, and I think Inland has them sexed maybe.....

I hope this isn't a silly question but I'm wondering how you go about getting a pair of bangaiis? I heard Frank Marini speak about his 10+ years of experience with bangaiis. From what I understood he said there was no identifiable physical difference between male and female. How does a place know they are a pair? Are they a proven pair? Do they go by behavior? I'm just curious.

*edit: Marini dismissed the idea of the "bulldog look/squared off jawed theroy" from what I understood. He showed photos (I think of Steve Hopkins?) and said it wasn't possible to tell the difference.

I do know the fish themselves can tell- if you have a small group of juveniles eventually a pair will form, and the rest will have to be removed. If you then figure out which is a male you can use him to sex other fish for you by his response to them.
