Anyone Dose Vitamin C

I do on occasion. I put 1000mg tablet into sump a couple times a week. Colors and health of zoos are great. I use Spring Valley Natural Vitamin C 1000mg with rose hips.

I was just recommending against rose hips since the various amounts of other chemicals going into the tank could be problematic at some point.

Hollback, what dosing are you going by. I'm using a 100x less than what is recommended on RC currently. Looking for a positive effect but adding 30ppm of VC seems a bit ridiculous.

I'm doing just like osu133lbs is doing. Dosing a few times a week. I am also using the same brand with rose hips. Are they really that bad? Do I need to change brands? I got them at WalMart.

The difference would be similar to adding whiskey to your tank instead of vodka. Long-term effects are unknown with whiskey and I personally wouldn't do it. I like purity, especially when it comes to reef tank additions.

From the sounds of it, VC at high doses acts like vodka, sugars, or vinegar. In this case the bacteria will be pulling anything organic out of the water, including impurities. So, in not answering the question.... I don't know if rose hips will cause issues. If there is left over organic phosphates and nitrates then over time you may actually build up more P/N in your water...

I'm interested in VC because of the reported increase growth in zoos afflicted with what looks like a diseased state. I have had similar results in growth with small additions of sugar (0.04ppm) on zoos. But one colony of blue zoos is not growing and has a light brown film on it. So, I'm evaluating VC on its ability to treat zoos at 0.05ppm currently. Next week 0.10ppm.

The zoa boys on reef to reef (club-zoa) have a very long thread on this as well. From what I have read, zoanthids seem to respond well to some levels of treament. I have not tried using it yet.

I just set up a zoanthid dominated pico tank. Considering its small size, worry about the system depleting micro nutrients that are not replaced by water changes. I may add tiny doses and monitor

I'm playing with this as well...using the pure stuff from I-Herb described in the link below.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1539690&highlight=hlle

I've been dosing about every-other day for a couple/few weeks...dosage roughly on the lower end of the little chart in the link. I'm seeing greater polyp extension on sps (assuming it is from VC and not something else) and improved water clarity (again, assuming it's from VC). Zoos "look better" but probably too soo to identify true impacts.

I purchased the i-herb stuff a while back. I tried it for a little bit, but honestly partially lost track of it and didn't see a ton of change.

It's still in the fridge. I might have to try again.

We were doing the vitamin C thing but by the time we got to 2500mg twice a day our skimmer went nuts. We were having to empty it twice a day also. We're using a bak pak on that tank and even raised the the cup up an extra 1-1.5" to try to stop it from overflowing.

Then our Alk started raising. I stopped dosing when it got to 12. The PH kept dropping. I had to dose the ph daily (sometimes twice a day) to keep the PH above 7.8. Probably what was causing the rise in Alk.

We were using the 500mg pills from Kroger. I assume all the issues were from using the non-buffered crap pills. We're talking about trying again once we order the buffered pure crystals from iherb. Although we saw no difference while dosing Vit C and it's a lot of money for the amount that needs to be dosed. So we may just give up on it and call it snake oil. :)

I've been regularly using the Vitamarin-c product from Brightwell Aquatics(former Kent chemist) and my zoas are going crazy. I don't know that the color has necessarily been helped by it, but the growth is obvious since I started using it.

Any ideas what the concentration of the bottle or amount going in the tank is?

Buckeye1, how much are you adding to your tank and how much water is roughly in your tank. I can figure the rest out from that.

I am dosing 2 teaspoons of powder a day to my system. Its on the low side for the volume of water. Zoos seem to really like it.

What are the benefits to using vitamin C ? Does this work like the vodka dosing method you wrote about Genetics ?

Vitamarin C is 1,500mg/oz of Ascorbic Acid

Ingredients are Purified water, Ascorbic Acid, "buffering agents"

I've been adding b/w 6- 8ml a week to my 75 gallon, although I have missed a few doses here and there.

One of the side effects is reduced N/P. Looking to see about zoos.

If you dose only 1 day a week at 8mL you are essentially adding 2ppm after you figure in your live rock displacement of water in your 75g. Very interesting as this is 15x under the recommended dose by someone on RC to see enhanced zoo growth. Even more so if you only add it once a week.

zepplin, you add 2 tsp per day to what size system? If you have a guess on the water volume I would love to hear it. Zoos look good and healthier since dosing?

I'd guess the system is about 550-600 gallons total. Yes, my zoos look much better since starting the dosing. I also think the coloration and health of my lps has seen an improvement.
