Anyone else been shocked by their Coralife Aqualight?

I went to turn off my 96w Aqualight tonight and got a HUGE shock to my hand. I couldn't figure out where it could have come from (other than the switch, which I then felt around, but nothing happened). As I was looking, my finger moved over the screw in the back on the right side panel...POW! Got it again. Touched the front ones...nothing. Then I touched the one on the bottom...POW! Got it again. Now my entire arm stinkin' hurts.

Has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone have any idea as to what could be causing this?

today's lesson.... dont touch the screws.

i have several lights from coralife from 2x9w to 2x96w. they all dischage from the screws.

You had to zap yourself three times to be sure it was shocking you :eek1: . ?

I'd pull it apart (after unplugging it ;) ) and check for a loose wire or salt creep in the fixture. If you can't find anything I'd suggest you have an electrician look at it. You don't want that kind of stray voltage anywhere around saltwater.

Good Luck,

As a public service I just checked/touched all the screws on both my Coralife fixtures and didn't get any kind of shock. I don't think it's normal to have the screws discharging electricity.

I find it ironic that the same person who commented that it took OP three shocks to figure out this was a bad thing then proceeded to take the warnings of two users that the screws shock people as a prompt to go touch all the screws on his (i'm assuming you're a guy Agu, as i can only imagine us guys would think this) own fixture :)

I don't think that ANY piece of electronics shocking you when touched should be considered "normal" isn't that what the little "UL" sticker means?

i was goign to post that, then i read it

ive done stupid stuff lie kthat, like forgot to turn off my ballast to re wire the lunars, halide is in same box, it was off, touched a wire, got idk how many, but enough volts to numb my pain for a few minutes

take the reflector off the screw they use for the ground is to long had "allmost "the sane problem ( it only took me one shock LOL )

hahaha... kinda like that Simpsons episode when Lisa put an electric charge on a cookie and Bart kept touching it...

ouch!!

ouch!!

hey, thanks for the tip ppl. i am in the market for buying a coralife light fixture. now i know what to look out for. lucky for me, i have a multimeter left over from my electrician days. will may sure mine is good to go so I, or anything else won't get shocked.

Since I have to manually move the fixture when doing water changes I was pretty sure my fixtures were't putting out any stray electricity . That and I'm a masochist ;) .

I've contacted customer support at Energy Savers Unlimited and pointed out this thread to them.
