Anyone ever come out ahead with AEFW

Just wanted to know if anyone saved any sps after a aefw's took over there tanks, I see to many sps pics that once that eat the base the coral usualy dies off. I know some people frag them but once you find one there tends to be 100 more. I just think its easy to just throw out all sps and start from scratch again.

Also why will AEFW not go after digi's and some other very Hairy sps like greens birdnest, green slimmer, porc, etc.....

I don't know if I came out ahead, but I had AEFW and got them out of my tank. I picked up an A. Nana from a local shop, put it in the tank, and didn't think anything about it. Few weeks later I'm moving into my new tank and when it came time to transfer everything I saw this.

The front of the coral was in pretty good shape so I never suspected a thing. I dipped that coral for 6-7 weeks in Coral RX and saved most of the tips and the bottom of the stalk. Those pieces went on to frag plugs and finally one of them made it back to the 180 and is doing well. I've got two more nice frags in my QT that I'll pass along once they're bigger. I think I probably got lucky though. It sounds like most people find them on several corals at once but I had them on one. I can only guess that the coral hadn't been in the tank long enough for them to move to new ones. In any event, I haven't had anymore trouble since then.

I dont think anyone has come out "ahead"........... but many people have beat them, myself included. Had I known that 6 months after I successfully erradicated them I was going to kill the entire tank anyway I surely would have saved the effort

IME, in the past I found a bunch of AEFW and eggs on a Mille Colony that I ended up losing. I quickly removed the affected colony and added a Melanarus Wrasse. Turkey basted every colony and frag and the wrasse would follow the baster around! Must have caught it early b'cuz I've never seen any AEFW since and this was approx. 2yrs ago (knock on wood)!

so what sps coral do AEFW dont like or eat

When I had them, they were on milles, tricolors and stags (formosa, insignis), and some unknown ID acros, especially. I never had them on any torts (cali, oregon), or vermiculata/tenuis looking types. Coincidentally, those are the only types of acros I still have from before the "incident" :)

Just treated my tank with praziquantel and right now, I am battling red bugs. What's next?

Interceptor will get rid of RB's and you can dose it directly into the DT. Be sure to shutoff skimmer and follow up with a water change within 24-48hrs.

Same...it was a mille colony that I found an infestation of AEFW!!!

I have! However, the eaten portion of my huge A.Valida colony had to be tossed away. I fragged the colony and saved the good portions, and treated the tank with fluke tab. The frag was re-planted and later on grew to be a huge colony again.

I've beaten AEFW's, red bugs, and Montipora-eating nudis.. so far, the most tedious and hardest to eradicate was the AEFW's. It requires several fluke tab dips and is totally messy procedure. The fluke tabs also killed my Xenia and GSP mats.

I have AEFWs atm.

They hit right as I was rebuilding following and Alk/heat related crash. I lost huge colonies of nana, valida, blue millie and torts that survived the crash and lots of new pieces as well.

I've always dipped every thing that comes in, rigorously!!! And, over the first few days a new addition gets dipped again and again....

.... " Note to self, dipping doesn't stop infestation! You have to QT incomming corals just like fish!" ....

... FWIW, it seems anyone with any level of success at turkey basting the AEFWs has a wrasse population or some other FW hungry fish. I've clipped off frags, mini colonies where I can, tossed the bases of all acros, been dipping as much as they can stand, I've gathered the acros all together in one tank in my system, and will start a systemic treatment with Levemisol (sp?) treating both the isolated acro area and the entire system several times. The acros will remain isolated for at least 8 weeks after I start the systemic treatment. They've been isolated a couple of weeks already but I'm still finding patchs of acro growing on random LR here and there throughout the system. It's my understanding that any patch of acro can harbour eggs and therefore, reinfestation.

... At least, that's the plan!

I'm taking a hard a swing at this as I can without going right to the trash can and a acroless system for 3-6 months. ... That's plan B :sad2:

Bax I'm sorry things have gotten worse. On the bright side, when you've got it beat, come over and do some shopping. Shaun Bennett is having a growth spurt, can definitely spare a frag.
