Heh. Reminds me of my own "rock story". Back when I was 17 years old I was snorkling (in the Red Sea), the rock beside the one I tried to pick up swam up, head-butted me in the facemask, and swam away (all as fast as you could snap your fingers). Closer than I'd like to be to a stonefish...

Moby, we have a "clam" at the store looks like a big hunk of rock. I thought it was a rock and almost threw it into the frag vat, then noticed it close up. It's siphon opens up about 1/4" but is about an inch long.

We had one of these and didn't notice it for months. I named it Golem (not to be confused with Gollum). I bet Scott can appreciate that one. :D

I think it's still there; I'll have to look. It was pretty small, about the size of a nickel.

Only because of my sordid AD&D past. I am not up-to-speed on the actual witchcraft/occult associated with golems. :hmm3: :frog:

So was Golem a hobbit once too?

A golem is an artificially created human being made up of inanimate matter (stone, mud, sand, wood, etc.) that is given life by supernatural means (Hebrew folklore). It's often a part of popular fantasy games.

Gollum was originally a Stoor hobbit by the name of Smeagol. He killed his brother, Deagol, while fighting for Sauron's ruling ring and was driven mad by it in short order, developing a split personality -- Smeagol being "good" though having lost much of his memory of goodness and Gollum being "bad" and caring about no one/nothing but the ring ("the precioussss").

My boyfriend and I are both fantasy nuts. He's always got his nose in a book and I'm usually playing fantasy RPG video games.

Moby, I just got a sense of scale of that clam - it's WAY bigger than the one I have/had.

Sandy, A golem isn't necessarily human, just a human-like being made of inanimate matter.

I read that the Smeagol-Gollum split personality business was a bit embellished in the film compared to Tolkien's Hobbit & LOTR trilogy, but I'm not sure, I haven't read it since I was like 13. You've got me curious now though. :)

I do not think the scene where Smeagol was arguing with Gollum was in the book, but that level of split was pretty much in there. Gollum talked mostly to himself, while the Smeagol personality, when it emereged, addressed the hobbits directly.

Here is a link to a modern golem - not one of folklore or medieval witchcraft or from the mind of TSR. :)

Yeah. I should have used 'humanoid' when I posted. The only golem I have much experience with was a playable character in Dragon Age on the 360. ;) I've read bits and pieces of Tolkien's books but got lost in the Silmarillion once there were dozens of prominent names being mentioned throughout chapters and I just couldn't keep up with them all. I'm not that much of a book worm but some books just sort of draw you in.

Either way, Golem is a great name for a "living rock".
