Anyone feed birds in the winter?

lol funny ,Squirrel baffle maybe, You can always use just the suets and hang it ?

Suets might just be the best bet. With seed, the rat hangs out on the ground eating all the throwaways from the birds. Typically I wouldn't really be concerned but it gets a little crazy taking two 87lb dogs out on leashes when that thing is hanging out. lol

Mel...too bad we weren't neighbors.....since we moved I set up the feeders here and have found that there are a lot of "outdoor" cats......so the cycle begins and ends....bird to feeder.....feeds.....cat sees bird....bird goes away....cat goes....bird returns....and it starts all over again.

Anyone want the woodpeckers from my neighborhood? They've done a good bit of damage to my house. If I ever catch one of those buggers I'm going to break it's neck and leave it out as an example for all the other woodpeckers...

Heh... the outdoor cats around here avoid our property like the plague. I think they've seen the drool coming out of the dog's mouths when they're spotted. I think my best solution will be to replace the 4' chain link fence with a 6' stockade fence. That way I can release the hounds and the rat is on his own. ;)

i've enjoyed the turkeys alot this winter. my poor bird dog wants a piece of them ,and the owl that hangs out in backyard .

Omg I'm so jealous! Ive been reading on building an owl house in order to attract them I never see them around although Im sure they are.
Turkeys are great too :) Ill trade you my pain in the ###Great Blue hering for your owl lol

They have suets for every kind of bird your looking to attract and it's less mess, and an unhappy rat! I would go this route :)

Owls are definately around. Not seen too often though. When it comes to bird vocals... owls are my favorite, followed by loons and then mourning doves.

In the spring we hear them on Honeoye Lake.......they don't stay long but are nice to hear....and I saw the first one last year....so now I have a 500MM lens for the camera, just trying to figure out how to keep it in the truck with the co-worker....lol

The only bird I HAVE chased off this winter was a great blue eyeing my koi, the rascal. Fortunately I have a winter cover, and will install a Scarecrow watersquirter for the spring, because I'll bet he remembers where they are!

it's kinda sad. my family was more freaked out by owls, than the gun shots at are old place. i took my9 y/o son out to listen to the owls and turkey's fight. he wasn't into it.

there's an owl in my neighbor's garage....they have been trying to get it out all winter. it's a little spooky if you walk out there at night and hear it coming from the rafters....

Shawna-

I've got the same customers coming to my feeders. I feed black oil sunflower and suet. I found that the cheaper bird seed mixtures were a waste of money since the birds pick through and only eat the sunflower seeds, leaving the other seeds on the ground.

I'm planning on putting up a few bluebird houses this spring.

We also have lots of bats in the summer, which are really cool to watch in the summer evenings. If I get some time, I'll make some bat houses with my daughters and we'll hang those up too this year.

lol Scott those darn bats drive us crazy in the summer! but yeah I agree on the cheaper food.
I'd love just to see a bluebird! Never seen one but I don't have any houses for them either.
Also purple martins -Never seen them either (think I need to borrow some plans from you on bird houses lol
