Looking for some pics of a purple LTA, I know someone who is selling one and would like to see some pics for comparasion purposes. please include some info if you would like how long you had it, under what lights, is it perched in a rock or sand, etc
heres an old one about a month after I had it.....
It has gotten to be a deeper more intense purple color since introduced into my tank. I have it under 2 250watt 10k MH's for 7 months. So far so good, It does seem very healthy. Its in the deepest part of the sand bed where I can acually see its foot attached on the bottom of the tank.
Some old pictures from my album, I havent updated them for some time, its quite a bit bigger and even darker now.
When I first got it, rescued it from an LFS under a single T8.
18 months - 2 - 2 1/2 years later.
I have soem 3 year + photos I will post up when I dig them out at home, if not I will take some more.
LTA's are sand swelling anemones and ideally need a DSB, mine sits in a 7" sand bed, its foot is stuck to the bottom of the tank through the 7". well and truelly anchored. They like to sit just in front of the reef with the LR just behind them, they will even anchor to the underside of the rock in some cases.
Mine was sat under 220W PC lighting in a 20Gallon tank then moved to 75 G directly under a 250W MH lamp ( dual 250W pendant with actinics).
Nice pics everyone, Now what is the going price for one of these guys. The one I plan to purchase is about the size of a volleyball according to the owner but I really doubt it is that big.
we'll see
Originally posted by fragaholic I would advise against an LTA in your case. As stated above they are sand dwelling animals and need a DSB. It will not anchor to a rock.
well, I've heard that many times in regards to carpets and LTA's and I've personally seen dozen of tanks with both carpets and LTA's in a BB tank. I'm not saying that I would do it but I know its been done.
Well, you could try the rubbermaid container filled with sand, then just gently placing the anemone in that and surrounding it with rocks. That has worked well for quite a few people.
You may of seen it done but you will see once you have had one long term they will prefer the sand, they are very simple creatures who may take many 1000's of years to evolve and some think that they need the stimulation of the sand to be happy and feel at home. They will not wonder on the sand once they have found a suitable spot.
Are you so sure they were M doreensis you have seen on the rocks... I very much doubt that givent he option of a sand bed and the rocks it would choose the rocks unless the light was not strong enough in which case they may of been trying to get higher to survive.
If you want to disregard the comments from experienced M doreensis keepers that is up to but imo if you can not provide the substrate type and depth needed then you are simply putting the welfare of the anemone at risk which I think is irresponsible . A BTA is far more appropriate for a BB tank.
