Anyone have $2700 lying around?

Apparently that is what is costs to replace the timing chains and tensioners on a Nissan Quest.
For that price, putting in a low-mileage used motor is looking like a better option.

Looks like new fish and corals are moving to the back burner for a little while.

Let's tally the month of June shall we?

First week of June - Washer dies. Can not be repaired.
Second week of June - Lightning strike takes out phone, internet, and satellite. Fortunately everything but a network card was fixed by Verizon and DirecTV. (Neighbor lost big screen, two other TV's, and his audio system.)
Today - Wife's van shuts down on her way to work. Too bad Verizon isn't picking up the tab on this one.

What a month. Someone check on me on the 30th to make sure I get through the next week.

Ok, whine over. Thanks for listening.

$2700 is about the going rate for that type of repair....

for $1,500 you can buy a brand new 150cc chinese scooter/moped!

So they tell me. Haven't been by to see it yet. And it is actually 3 chains!

If it's overhead cam and the chain broke, then there is the possibility of valve damage, which might be the reason for the $$$.

my timing chain broke before...when ur chain breaks ur valves stay in whatever position they're in (up or down) but the pistons keep moving. unless you turned off the engine immediately...i'm almost sure one of the pistons wacked a valve. not an easy thing to repair as you have to literaly take apart the whole top half of the motor. good luck on that.

Some engines are non valve bending engines. Meaning the pistons will not hit the valves if a timing chain or chains were to break. I'm not sure if the Quest is one of those vehicles or not.

Looks like the Quest has known tensioner problems.....

(Buzzing or whining noise from front of engine. Some 2004-07 Nissan cars and trucks with the VQ35 or VQ40 V6 engine may produce an alarming buzzing or whining sound from the front portion of the engine. According to the Japanese maker, the noise tends to get louder as engine speed increases, and is most likely the result of too much slack in the secondary timing chains. Installing redesigned chains (Part No. 13028ZK00B, two required) and chain tensioners (Part No. 13070-ZK01A, bank 1; 13070-ZKOlB, bank 2) should eliminate the noise in short order.
Models that are susceptible to the problem and can benefit from the updated valve timing parts are 2004-06 Altimas; 2004-07 Maxima sedans and Quest minivans; and 2005-07 Pathfinder, Xterra & Frontier trucks.)

You may want to check with your Nissan dealer if it's a known problem. Maybe they can take on some of the cost... especially if you bought it new from them.

Don't mind him Lee, he is just upset because we are on vacation this week and yesterday the bulb burned out in the tv and it will take 5 days to get a new one. Plus the expense which we did not plan for. Our troubles are nothing compared to what you have now. If you need anything just let us know. Did you get a loaner car for Michelle?
If I don't hear from you soon I will definetly call you on the 30th to make sure you got through the week without a nervous breakdown.;)

$1500 for a scooter! If it cut my monthly gas consumption in half, it would pay for itself in 15 months!

My de facto policy is to spend all the cash in my pocket. The rest is locked away in an IRA (thank goodness).

So sorry Lee, sounds like one of my weeks. We are trying to get our Jetta in to be repaired right now. Hang in there!
