It's not actually electricity, but a chemical reaction simular to what fireflies do. A number of sea creatures do this. Bioluminesence is very cool
BTW scallops filter feed on phytoplankton. They need large quantities on a daily basis to do well. Either something like DT's, the concentrates from Reed, or culturing your own is the only way to keep them alive.
ive had one for a couple months now. I just feed it phyto every so often. The LFS say that I should vary it's diet, witch iam starting to do. Everyone that i have talked to says that they have a very short life span in captivity. I will actually be kinda surprised if it lives more than a couple more months.
Feed it daily with good phytoplankton and you just might get more than the couple of months it takes to starve You can take it out and put it in a bucket to feed for a couple of hours in order to make sure it's getting plenty. One of the favourite algaes for shellfish aquaculture is T-Iso, Tahitian Isochyrisis galbana, which is readily available.
