Anyone have Fairy or Flasher Wrasse?

Hey everyone,

I've been out of the hobby for 2 years but I am back and working on my stocking list. So far I am looking at these fish in my 75gal: 2x Picasso Clowns, 3x Blue/Green Chromis, Kole Tang, and a few anthias (not sure of species yet.)

I was wondering if anyone has experience with Fairy or Flasher Wrasse in their reef tank? Last I heard, the Six Line was the only recommended reef safe wrasse.

Thanks for any input! I look forward to hearing about your experiences.

Fairy and flasher wrasses are reef safe. I would lose the chromis. 6-lines are a PITA.

I'm getting the rhomboid wrasse so will update you when I receive it.

IMO I would not get a Six Line, I have never had one but I have herd terrible things about aggression with them, Don't take my word for it though seeing as i've never had one.

A group will become one; more importantly, they are highly susceptible to uronema.

I've successfully had 3 in this tank for 6 years before I took it down. I hope to be successful again. I have never encountered uronema but so many fish are susceptible to so much. Can't let that stop you. I'll look into treatments for uronema so I can have the proper meds on hand.

So after some lengthy reading, I have to agree with you on the uronema. That is one nasty bug. It seemed to pop up right after I took down my tank.

I'll be avoiding Chromis for a while! Not sure why it didn't get brought up in my other stocking post. I'm gonna have to dig deep for some new stocking ideas.

I agree with others, stay away from 6 lines. I have a male flame fairy wrasse and next to my starry blenny, he is the most peaceful/personable fish in the tank. Awesome color and spends most of his time swimming up in the open. Anthias are cool, but can be a little touchy and kind of bipolar too. (The males can be pretty rough on the females, so over time you might just end up with a lone male.)

I've been reading that the larger fairy wrasse tend to go after small shrimp. That worries me considering I tend to go heavy on Peppermint shrimp. Best way to control Apistasia but you need the numbers. I've come up with a new list but far too many planktivores to keep any Anthias.

3x Yellowstriped Cardinals, 1x Royal Gramma, 1x Carpenter Flasher, 2x Picasso, and 1x Kole Tang

I've owned a few different ones, but I personally haven't experienced or heard of fairy (Cirrhilabrus) wrasses going after shrimp. Mysterys and 6 lines (Pseudocheilinus) on the other hand, can have a tendency to go after peppermint/ornamental shrimp as they get bigger.

Ahh.. that's good to hear. A redhead Solon fairy is still a possibility but I think the Carpenter Flasher is preferred.

The redhead solon (Solorensis) are excellent fish and very peaceful. I had one for a while and it was a model citizen.
