anyone interested a trade my fresh water plants for your coral

Good advice. I would suggest Bolbitis heudelotii or African water fern, anubias and cryptocoryne. All are low light species and grow relatively slowly so you won't be pruning all the time. You might want to spot substrate fertilize the anubias and cryptocorynes. I used a product called Terrapur which were cone shaped fertilizer pellets.

Bolbitis is great, both types (can never remember the other species).
Also the ubiquitous java moss is a low light staple and riccia fluitans CAN be done in low light if you grow it as a surface plant only. Some aponogetons seem low light friendly (iirc) although really do better at higher light levels. Most anubias don't float my boat due to uninteresting leaf shape but I've seen people grow jungles of anubias roots which looks pretty cool. Cardinalis seems to be ok, if a bit lanky and pale in low light. I have some java fern for you Norm if you like.

And that's a really nice crypt! Someone should give a sweet frag for that. C.cordata, even the boring green one, always went for big $.
I'm even thinking about offering up a trade but don't really have much.....:D

Ok, here's a couple questions...

What do you recommend for a non equipment intensive nano planted setup for a newbie?

Is there such a thing?

thanks!

Hey Norm, us killie breeders essentially ended up having to set up low light, non-equipment intensive, inexpensive, planted nano tanks just cause that's what killies like and we can afford. Killie freaks need lots of tanks (i had over 120 at one point) but mostly they're small (5-20g).
What we did was simply bare bottom tanks with plants in pots, cups etc... or loose (java moss, riccia etc...). Having no substrate made everything easier to keep clean and the potted plants did fine till they were rootbound and had to be repotted. Sponge filter and a heater and you're done.

ianiwane: I'll definitely take you up on your offer when I am ready to take the Freshwater Plant Tank plunge. Thank you!

The website looks beautiful. I've always liked the look of rimless glass tanks for freshwater plant tanks, looks clean, modern, and tranquil.

Want Xenia?

V

I'll see what I get this sunday from my friend. If I don't get any xenia I would be happy with one. Thanks.

The crypt is basically green now. It will show the coloration im my pic at lower light and lower nitrates. My tank in that pic has about 5 watts per gallon of T5HO so its quite a bit. I would be open to trades for that plant.

ADA also make rimless glass tanks with glass overflows for reef tanks. I'm sure if anyone is interested aquaforest could special order them for you. They are pricey though.

Just let me know when you decide to set a planted tank up. I'll give you some clippings.

Hmm.... I'm thinking a 3-way trade could work here :)

And I'd love to get more advice from you guys.

Ok... more newbie questions....

I'd always need to run a heater in a planted tank?

Do people run planted tanks with natural lighting?

What if I set up a big tank out in the backyard?

Are the screw-in 20w mini power compacts suitable for planted tanks?

Thanks!

3-way trade sounds like it could work. You could run a 10 gallon with 2 20w power compacts one is probably not enough. There is someone that has a naturally lighted plantedtank in malaysia I think. The thread is on aquaticplantcentral.com somewhere so it can be done. You probably want to run a heater unless you can keep your tank above 70 degrees with out a heater.

I also have some cherry shrimp that I could start people with if they wanted. I do also have some really high grade crystal red shrimp that I could trade as well (it won't be for a little while though, I have someone who wants all that he can buy from me). I am expecting a 500+ dollar order of shrimp from japan in a day or two.

If you're keeping tropical plants, yes, you'll need a heater unless it stays tropical by itself (in a well sealed fish room). Plenty of people run planted tanks in all levels of lighting, and when I used to live back East, there was a combo water garden/aquarium place that had plenty of sunlit only tanks. Really nice too. A big tank out in the backyard would work fine. Since there are higher order freshwater plants from all water temps, qualities, lighting levels etc..., you just need to know what your tank conditions are likely to be and you can easily design a plant community around that.
I haven't used the screw-in fluorescents.

Yeah, I was shown a pricelist for those cherry shrimp, as I recall, the Rising Sun high grade ones were over $100/shrimp. Yikes!
Makes $40, 1/2" frags seem cheap!

Yup, I am getting some hinomaru crystal red shrimp. Hopefully they make it alive.

http://www.azgardens.com/shrimpfactory.php

Anyone ever keep Singapore Wood Shrimp? These shrimp are huge and look like they're made out of wood. They'd be perfect in a Miyazaki movie. I didn't realize there were so many shrimp available now for freshwater tanks.

Ive never kept them, but be wary if you are planning on ordering from azgardens I've heard lots of bad things about their live stock.

I have an idea. I have a 60cm ADA rimless tank all set up (24inches x 12 x 14) I am at the end of a fight with algae and will post a pic soon. I was thinking about getting rid of it to set up another reef tank. My friend has a 2ft x 2ft x 16in tank for me. The tank includes:
ADA 60cm tank 120 (cost)
sunlight supply new wave 4x24 T5HO (with 4 bulbs) 150
4 extra T5HO bulbs 2 GE starcoat (GE used for 1-2 months) 2 JEBO 12000k (new) 40
XP1 filter 60
Cheap ikea stand 50
DIY external CO2 reactor 25
Plants all set up including some rare stuff HC, eriocaulon goias (35 a plant), eriocaulaceae type 2. (plants worth 150+)

445 (cost of equipment) plus 150+ in plants for 350 dollars of frags? When I have my new tank setup. Does that sound fair? All someone would need to add is a CO2 system.

This is just an idea not set on it quite yet. Just a feeler. If anything it won't be for a couple weeks until I have the algae in check and am comfortable giving away the tank.

Looks like Norman has it. Here is a pic of the tank I just took.

and a orbit sattelight 1x18w fixture with a 50/50 and a pure 10k, am i missing something very vital?

You might want to use a different substrate. A small tank like tank you should use ADA soil. Other than that you're all set. Just need some hardscapes and plants :) It's kind of ironic that some of the planted tank people are going salt water and now some of the saltwater people are going planted tank :)

If you really want to start it you should check out www.sfbaaps.org for your planted tank needs. I can give you some plants if you need some.

yup ditto on that. Use ada aquasoil. You will need only a 3L bag for that. It will help you out greatly. Anyone let me know if you guys need plants too.
