Anyone Keeping Zoas Under PCs Anymore?

It seems like everyone is making the switch to either t5ho or halides for their zoas, and i was wondering if anyone still used compacts.

If so will you state your tank size and specs and maybe a picture??

thanks guys,
Xavier

I recently upgraded to T5's, but my profile picture has the zoas in my 20gal. under 24watts of CF's.

Here are pictures of Zoanthids and Palythoas in my 24 gallon Aquapod with 80 Watts of PC lighting. Most of these started as 5 polyp frags less than a year ago. Sorry about the blurry images, but bow front aquariums make crisp photography near impossible.

Can't seem to get a good color photo of these. They're iridescent pink with a pale iridescent blue skirt.

Anymore??

I use PC's for my main tank (29 gal, 110watts PC, 10K/actinic) and keep zoa's in it, I also use them for my frag tank (15gal, 130watts PC 10K/actinic), I always get good growth, usually if I frag something (I use fragging as an example because its easier to noticed growth on a small frag than a huge colony) I usually see 15-20 new polyps a month on average, really depends on the type of zoa.

More people use PC's than most people think, There was a poll on reef central that I found last month about what lighting people use and about 28% of the 3000 polled use PC's

(I don't know why PC's have gotten such a bad rap, I think I remember seeing a few article here and there in the past that say that PC's actually have a higher par, than a T-5 with the same wattage, but who knows I guess its all on preferance)

I like my PC's:)

thats kinda an old thread if we were to make a poll now i think it would me more like 40% halide % 35% t-5 20 % pc 5 % other

Just stated a 33 frag tank for zoas and am going to use PCs for lighting from the pics posted I just need to know what kelvin the PCs are and will go from there. Great topic.

just saying, I know alot of people who currently use pc's, i wouldn't go as far as saying the percentages have changed that much , but you may be right.:D

It would be nice to see some recent polls about the subject. (not to sure how you go about making one, wish I did)

I have the club PAR meter right now if you want me to compare them...:)

ive been useing pc lighting for 3 years and i got no problem with them cause i only keep soft corals and a few lsp when i upgrade to a 75 them im gunna get MH so i can puy what ever i like in the tank...oh ya im addicted to zoas and they do very good under my 48" pc fixture my zoos are doubleing every month and not dosing anything just water changes so i say PC lighting is fairly good for what i wanna do for now..

Yeah, test them with the par meter, I would like to know what the results are, (as i am sure others would too), .

but don't be one of those guys who test a year old set of PC's compaired to a brand new set of T-5s. Not to mention that they would have to be the same wattage (at least as close as possible) and so on...... (if were going to have an experiment, lets have a controlled one)

Aren't you late for school? (just kidding!):p

I think this is mostly because of the LFS selling nanos with them. That and I see that coralife PC fixture in every single store I go into. A better pole would be how many people have pc's sitting in storage :)

i gave my dad a 24 gal aquapod with power compacts and was always wondering if i could put zoas in there, great thread!!!

I modified the 64 watt stock lighting(2 x 32 watt) on my Aquapod 24 to accommodate two 40 watt Current USA Sunpaq PC lights. 16 more watts doesn't seem like much, but that's 25% more light overall. The longer bulbs go across the entire width of the aquarium, so the corners aren't dark like they were with the stock lighting. All of my corals are doing much better under 80 watts than before.

Here are some threads that deal with modifying the Aquapod hood/lighting if you're interested.
