I have a 200 gallon tank, and would like to add 2 purple tangs. I have heard that these tangs are aggresive. So just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this. Thanks

I had 2 in my 400 for over 2 years upto 1 dying 3 months back. Conventional wisdom seems to be keep odd numbers of zebrasomas together to spread the aggression.

I agree, get 3 of them. You will have better success.Whats the dimensions of the tank?

I don't agree that putting 3 purple tangs in the same tank is a good plan. I am curious why he would have 'better success". I would also be curious as to the other inhabitants of the tank and the age of the tank/aquascaping in the tank.

friends 300g dd he has 2 yellows and 2 purples, they all get along pretty well, but initially had some chasing so he put a mirror at the end of the tank and fish stop fighting each other lol was funny to see all the fish go down there, especially his wrasse's as they started flashing themselves

I have seen multiple reef and fowlr tanks with 2 or more purples with no issues and they have been together for years and I have also seen people that have tried and failed even in large 300 gallon tanks, imo its hit or miss but best chance is to add them at the same time and wait and see and be able to rehome one just in case, I have 4 yellows right now in a 300 fowlr with no issues occasionally chasing started out with 5 lost the runt of the group after 6 months but he was not beat up just died.

Tank dimensions are 4foot by 3 foot, I have a ton of live rock. Fish, i have 2 small yellow tangs, one large sailfin tang, two yellow striped marrons, An emperator angel, and a couple of blennies. Thanks everyone for your good thoughts!!

quick question, if you have 1 yellow and 1 purple tang already, would it be okay to add another purple tang in a 250?

No, you don't have room for any more fish. Are you aware how large your angel will get, and the tank size required for it? Additionally, your sailfin tang is not suited for that size tank.

I agree that you tank is full. Those are some BIG fish, that will actually get big in an aquarium.

Something to consider...big fish in a small tank make the tank look even smaller. How about changing out some of those larger fish with smaller species?

You guys relize this is a 200 gallon tank right? I just told you i have 8 fish and your telling me my tank is full. lol

Yes, we do, and yes, we are. I have a strong feeling that the advice you asked for will be ignored, and you will add the fish you wanted to add.

Your sailfin and hopefully your emperor will get a foot long each easily. That's a lot of fish right there. Two one foot long fish in a 4' tank is a lot. I'm saying you are full on big fish. Get some small fish to balance things out, if you are going to get more, and be prepared to rehome the sailfin or emp when they get too big. Don't get any more "large" fish.

The sailfin is going back to his owner soon, buddie of mines tank crashed, and i have had the emperator for a year now and he is still small. Im guessing its gonna be 5 or 6 years till he gets to be a foot long. And when that happens maybe ill get a bigger tank. And yes i have made up my mind I am going to get the two purple tangs. Thanks to the peaple that actually answered my original question.

Yes we realize but you have to considered that those fish will grow. You have to consider the rate tank size each fish. So if a yellow tang is required to a 50G minimum. That's 50 less on the 200G.

There is a shock.

Newsflash: we did answer your question. You chose to disregard the answer. There was never any doubt in my mind that you looking for validation for a bad decision.
