My powerhead fell a little and aimed at the sand to gently take some of it away. Left standing looked like a bunch of poop strands standing on end almost like a carpet flapping in the breeze..pretty gross actually...is this what it was it was or soem kind of crazy algae? And what decomposes the poop in my tank and is there sails or something that will break it down? Weird question I know but...

Cant answer the what it was, but as far as where does the "poop" go, once it settles on the sand/live rock there is bacteria in the sand that breaks down left over food, "poop", and other detrius(sp), also I believe inverts such as snails, bristleworms and the like will also help with that

so what types of snails will eat this stuff cause I have built up poop on top of my sand even relatively quick after water changes (3 3 inch fish). And how many snails should I have in my aquarium (55 gal)

Are you sure they aren't some kinda worms?

im not sure of the name but those are tubes formed by a worm. i have them all in my sandbed. sometimes you can see them against the glass. they look like little earth worms. they are not much thicker than a thread. if you watch for them long enough you will see them in action.
