My six line is behaiving normally, but he has gotten very fat in the last couple weeks. Take a look at the picture. I am afried his stomach is going to explode. I've noticed my flatworms are back (I guess you can never get rid of all those little Ba##$$ds), so he may just be gorging himself. Thoughts?

Just some thoughts - but that is one major beer belly! I doubt it is from eating flatworms. My guess is a blockage in the gut, ascites (fluid build up), or a tumour. Hard to say which, though. Ascites is usually due to a bacterial infection. If it was a bacterial infection, your fish would probably show other signs of septicaemia. Alternatively, it could be a fluid filled abscess - which wouldn't be good (as it could tear open any time). My guess is that's itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s a blockage in the gut. Any chance you can catch it? I suggest this as you may try a couple things to loosen up potential blockages such as feeding veggies (I know, tough with this type of fish) or putting the fish in a concentrated Epsom Salt bath? You might try doing a search to see what other ideas turn up for moving gut blockages. Lastly, if it is fluid build-up, you could also try draining it, but that would require specialist veterinary intervention. This would essentially involve catching and anaesthetising the fish and aseptically making a very small incision to see if the belly drains. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but like I said - just some thoughts.

Mine did the same thing and was dead after two days. hope yours makes it. I really like that fish.

bummer...

bummer...

Yes, thanks. I can't imagine anyway in the world to catch him. He's been like this for about 2-3 weeks now. All I can do is watch and see. Bummer....

This may be completely out of the box - so someone jump in if it's a crazy idea. You could try offering it some sort of veggie feed coated/incorporated with Magnesium Sulfate (aka Epsom Salt). The combination of the vegetable material and magnesium sulfate would make for good laxative to move things along if a blockage was the problem. Veggie feed might include frozen or dry feed depending on what your can get. You could even try mashing and freezing some peas with cod liver oil/garlic (or some other feed attractant) with gelatine. Not sure if the fish would eat it - might just spit it out! Incorporation rate would be something approximating 30 mg/g of feed (based on what's published in Herwig). Food for though?
