Anyone Thinking of Dumping LEDS and going back to Halides

All this talk about MH and heat....I have 2 radions in a canopy, keep my house at 70 and can't get the temp below 81......it's getting annoying

There may be other sources like pumps that can raise the temp. Whats wrong with temps in the low 80s? That is a normal range for tropical waters.

I want it at 80. It's been getting close to 83. I don't think pumps are too much of an issue because it fluctuates at night down to about 80.5 and 82.5 mid day.

Put a small clip on fan over the tank they work well. If the temp is only falling to 80 with lights off its getting heat from a source other then the lights

Corals actually grow very fast, even the kind of growth you are showing I would consider that poor for MH. Below is what I consider an example of growth under MH. My tank, pictures are 11 months apart.

7 months after the first pic I pulled the blue stag (behind the blue tort) out of the tank.

You can see a bunch of little frags glued down in the fist pic and what they look like in less than a year.
Got a link to your build/tank info?

Exactly one year of growth under radium 20k 250 watt. Switched to led and didn't get 1/4 of that growth in 2 years and no where near the color. I was going through a gallon of 2 part every 1.5 - 2 weeks. Starting over now with radium 20k again. Have over 40 sps frags on the frag rack ready and they are coloring up amazingly.

Wow I have other corals other than monties as I said , I just posted that picture to show my growth in a year. I mean I was just making a comment on how I wish my growth was not so fast. I was not trying to out due anyone. I mean stags are fast growers too and so is seriatopora. Some corals grow inches in years not all are fast growers. Honestly most of them in our pics are super fast growers.

At least I post pictures as most in this thread are making claims but dont post pics.

Whats funny is mine are not grown under halides.

Again my point is I dont want growth as much as color because my growth is there already.

Another thing Joe is what you said about how fast corals grow.. That is why I laugh every time I see a tank loaded with frags especially sps Frags..

People dont give them enough room to grow. They want all these expensive frags and pack them so tight then eventually they are all battling for space. i dont think people realize how big a sps colony grows.

It is like people rather have a frag tank than colonies. If you want a frag tank then just set one up!

That is so true. Even with that tank I tried to space them 6-8 inches apart and you can still see how close they got. Yeah, people really pack them in, the sad thing is most of those frags never even make it judging by the amount of people who post pictures of only frags and never colonies.

Its the heat of MH, especially with summer coming, that is a deal breaker for me.
The tanks you guys grow are gorgeous, really cool.

Heat stopped being an issue about 6 years ago when I went with an open top. Now if I could just get my heaters to turn off during the summer time I would be happy.

I tried to space mine out, but apparently I under estimated significantly. Never under stood why people place frags so close the plugs touch. I was aiming for 4-5 inches of space and that is not near enough. Maybe I can use it as a point with the wife to get a bigger tank.

lol, and I'm switching from a hanging fixture to a canopy with my new build. :) But I think I have it well ventilated. We'll see how it goes. It's something I'm willing to put up with and figure out.

This is very true - I set up my tanks rimless because I love the look of a true "slice of the ocean" that having no top provides. The side benefit is tons of surface area open to the air currents of the room, which provides gas exchange and evaporation, keeping the tank much cooler. Chillers are more of a possibility if the top is enclosed in a canopy, though good air movement through the canopy can eliminate the problem.

Pack 'em in! Then you can tell the wife "sorry, but if we don't give them a bigger tank these corals could die!":D
