Anyone Use Gas Cans for Water Transporation?

I'm going to start buying my water from the LFS. It's too time consuming making it, and for 1.50 a Gallon for Reef Crystals I can live with that all day long.

They've got 5 gallon "Water" jugs with spouts that are made for water, but they are like $20.00.

I've got access to pallets of Brand New 5 gallon Gas and Diesel cans at my work. I was going to bleach them, then vinegar them, and then wonder if I could use them or not?

I haven't seen any info of this on-line.

Anyone have any comments on it?

My LFS carries these. Don't remember the cost but they for sure weren't $20!

Yeap, they're usually around $10-$12 each.

But if you can get new gas cans for free then go for it. You can always sell them later for $20 each and apply it to the RO/DI system you'll eventually get.

I have to say....considering the cost of a saltwater setup...why risk it for something that "may or may not work"?

Just even the likelihood of possible leaching of gasoline into your saltwater sounds crazy. Plastics all have the ability to absorb chemicals.

And $20 does sound high as I think I paid $10 for the ones I bought at my LFS.

Buy new ones, don't risk a disaster.

The gas cans he's looking at are brand new.
BUT... i highly doubt they are FDA approved "food safe" so I would be hesitant to use them for the possibility of leaching petroleum or some other chemical from the plastic.

I used some for a few years with no problems

if the new cans are plastic they probably will work fine. I would wash with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), then with water.

Your nose is the best indicator whether it is safe, if it smells like chemicals wash some more, or don't use it.

New gas cans are all I use to transport water. I have 5 five gallon jugs with the safety poor so that there easier to use. I've been using them for a while and talk to other people that also do it with no problem.

Just go to Walmart or your local Fleet store and look in the camping section. They have water jugs you can buy, I have 7G jugs and they were $14 a piece. You can buy 5G, 6G, or 7G is what I have found at our local L&M fleet store here in Minnie.

I appreciate the replies. I will go to Walmart first, see what I can get. I have a love hate relationship with my LFS. The employees are AWESOME people. They know their stuff, they tell people NOT to buy stuff that won't work. They are great, great people. They all text me when they get something good in, tell me when the shipment came in with Ich, and set fish aside for a few days and feed them for me.

The owners are miserable @#%^W. I try not to spend any more than I have to there, but it's a mile from my house.

I go to Petco for all my salt, food, filter floss, or any AVERAGE supply. I buy only what I can from them, and I'm not spending 18.99 on a Plastic Jug from them when I need a few.

The cans they have LOOK like Gas cans made for water. That's what made me think of it. I have an equipment business, I have pallets of brand new Gas Cans.....Just thinking as they have an easy pour which would make water changes quick and simple.

are you not still going to have to heat it up first before a WC?you will need to put a heater and powerhead into the bucket for this basically making a trip to the store and carrying jugs of water to save the 20 seconds it takes to dump in salt?
my last 2 set ups Ive put a LOT of thought and money into avoiding carrying any buckets of water. its easily been the best part of "upgrades"
