I need a temp controller that's reliable and I always heard ranco was one of the best. Anyone still use them? I don't want to invest in a full aquarium controller at the moment do to funds

I use a JBJ true temp controller. It's not terribly expensive and seems to work really well. I have 2 jager heaters plugged into it and I haven't had any issues with the unit.

Yes, tons of people have used ranco and still do. There are thousands of them out there in use. I've used around 10 of them on various things and while I had 1 failure it let me know it failed and it didn't stick on. The one on my display is 8 years old and works fine.

They are all going to fail at some point. The Ranco has an excellent history in that when it fails, it doesn't fail stuck on. You still need a glass thermometer in EVERY setup. There is no replacement. All electronic probe operated devices will fail.

I still use mine because I already had it from a previous tank. My first one failed after several years and I attribute the failure to excessive moisture in the sump area. On my last two builds I built a partition in the cabinet to house all my electrical devices away from any moisture.

I used to use them. The problem I ran into was the when the power would go out, it would always go back into cooling mode. Therefore, if my power flashed off while I was away, my heaters would not come on because the controller would be back in cooling mode. I even called and talked to Ranco about it. After how rude the guy was about the situation, I decided I'd never buy anything from them again. If I remember right, they don't even make the controllers. They buy them, put the wires on them and resale them.

Oh yeah. I even use some 3 digit Medusas - these are awesome if you can find them because they were made for humidity and aquariums. Regardless of what anybody thinks, there is no substitute for a Ranco. Their reliability and accuracy make a mockery out of an aquarium controller and hobby probe - I can get more than 10 years out of them and have never replaced a temp probe or ever had them fail until they just got too wet and gunky inside.

I'll bet that most folks with controllers have purchased two or three since I last bought a Ranco.

If if makes you feel any better, I was in back of a very high end steakhouse and their refrigerators with tens of thousands of dollars of aging meat are controlled by Rancos.
