anyone using a sump with the stock Oceanic 30 cube stand?

i would like to add a sump to my 30 cube so that i can use an insump skimmer. Space is very tight so i wanted to see what people have come up with.

If you have one what are you using?

To maximize the space in the stand pretty much the only option is a custom built sump. I have seen a few people use the CPR CR500 wet/dry (w/bio media removed) as a sump and it seemed to work out for them.

CR500

It's a little small but you could use an external pump to save some room inside the sump.

CPR CR500 is about the only one that will fit. I used it when I had a cube tank going. I used the AquaC Urchin skimmer in it.

My Oceanic 30 cube, on Oceanic's stand, uses a CPR overflow to a standard 5 gallon tank... The tank houses a mag7, a CPR SR2 Skimmer , and two 50 watt heaters... There's even enough room for Cheato and water :)

I keep the 5g tank about half full... With this set-up the sump doesn't overflow during power failures, and the tank is able to hold the sump's contents in case the CPR overflow loses siphon.

Here is a pic of my set up. The sump is 20.5L x 18.5D x 15H. There is a 10g refugium in the back and euro reef es5-2 in the front section. It also has 10 inches high baffles in order to maximize water volume in the skimmer section. The sump can hold a total of 25g when filled but only uses 17g when in use.

Thanks Matt. I ended up just building it myself because of the money I would save. So Cal Creations quoted me like $350 plus shipping which was way out of price range. It cost me $125 to build which was a huge difference in cost.

There are also a few other oceanic 30g on Nanoreef.com that you could check out. Navyavatar and Oggie also have great cubes...

Try acrylicsumps.com. I've exchanged a couple of emails with him. He seems to have a good rep and has done several Oceanic 30g sumps, many of which are posted on at the link.

I should have drilled my 30g but didn't want to deal with the hassle. Do you plan on drilling it now that it's set up or just an external overflow?

I have mine drilled right now for a closed loop. Not sure what im going to do for the overflow yet.

so how hard would it be to build and external overflow for it? I have one that I got a rediculous deal on and have been contimplating over this for some time! I want to do an external overflow and drill it for a closed loop as well but i had no clue that only the bottoms were tempered! so I guess I could take it to a glass shop and see what they would charge for all the drilling!?!?

I ordered a diamond bit from Ebay ~$6. I had never drilled a tank and was extrememly nervous but it was really easy. I bought a overflow box from FCA ~$60 and am running an external dorso. I built my own stand to accomodate some of the stuff I wanted to do. Here are a few pics.
