Anyone using these lights?

I have a 46 gallon bow front tank, new to the hobby and would like to get lights. Which one of these would you suggest? Thanks!

While I'm no expert, I think you need to decide on what you plan on keeping before you can decide on lights.

well, the reason you are having a problem finding replacement t5 bulbs for this fixture is that they are probably not HO t5 lights. which is fine, since the bulk of the lighting is taken care of by the MH lights.

I'm thinking you are right regarding the actinics. One of these days, when the wife isn't around, I'll open up the ballast/timer box and see what's in there.

whats the point of going with ho t-5 that fixture does not have the right reflector to maximize light reflection honestly those actinics are pretty useless but the price of this unit is still very atractive

I think for the price you cannot go wrong. I think I will try out the 48"MH\'T5' combo and since their skimmers are so cheap get one as well.. if it turns out it doesn't work very well (many of you claim they are pretty good) its cheap enough it isn't much money wasted to test.

well, thats a good question. but i bet you could slap some good reflectors in there and get a better ballast, and run ho t5s.. but yeah, why... the mh does the most lighting work....

The way I see it, the MH are my lights. The actinics are there as a bonus. They give me a "dawn" and a "dusk".

I'm happy with the lights. They aren't the "best" lights available, but at the same time, I can afford to pay the mortgage and buy some food :D

If I'm lucky, I might finally be able to get a few corals in my tank.

Would 220 total watts MH from Aquatraders be enough lighting for a 55 gallon tank with soft corals? I'm interested in the 48 inch (55 watt x4). If not, what how much wattage do you suggest?

thanks

I think their 220 (55wx4) is a Power Compact fixture. It's what I have on my 55 gallon. I really like them and I liked the price too. Take a look at my website to see what I have in my tank with them so far.

yep, that 220 watt unit sounds like a PC light...

if you go with the cheaper lights, you might as well get the MH t5 setup...

I ordered a light from Aquatraders that included free bulbs and when I received it the bulb was broken. Get this, I called the number and they said that because it is "free" that they do not need to replace it. If I am willing to pay $7.00 for shipping they will send me a replacement! Can you believe this? Not only that but they were RUDE and would not offer any assistance. The way I see it is that if they promise something and they don't deliver it, they are liable.

Here is my warning, DO NOT BUY FROM THEM. The packaging SUCKS, all they did was wrap scrap pieces of cardboard around the original THIN box. Then when items get damaged in shipment, YOU ARE THE ONE WHO LOSES! Even the ballast that came with the lights rattles when you rock is back and forth like something is loose or broken.

seven dollars for a new bulb doesn't sound completely unreasonable.........were you offered shipping insurance?? chances are it broke during shipping, so who is liable??

do you actually think they packed it broken???

I understand you may be a little upset about it. But, almost ALL places I have ever ordered supplies from will recharge the shipping cost for a damaged item they sent to replace it.

$7.00 to ship it? Just shipping.

I understand completely that I would be responsible for shipping if I wanted to return it or exchange it. But I do not understand why I should have to pay more money to receive what I paid for in the first place.

That being said, there first answer saying that because it was free they are not responsible doesn't make any sense to me either. If they are including something with my order, I should be able to receive it without paying more for something I have no control over.

theevoys, I am sorry that you are charged for shipping for damaged items. I have done a lot of shopping online and in fact sell products online, and I have never heard of such a thing. For example, I recently purchase Shark carpet cleaner from Drugstore.com. When I received it, it didn't seem to work properly. I called them and they sent me a postage paid label to return the first item and also OVERNIGHT shipped a new item for replacement. TigerDirect also quickly replaced a damaged item at NO COST to me. (Obviously I do a lot of shopping online).

The worst part of the whole thing was how rude the customer service person was. Anyone can take their chances with this company, and I hope that you are one that doesn't have a problem, because if you do, your not going to be happy.

hmmm... I agree. I recently got 2 defective products from F&S. They didn't even ask me to ship the stuff back, they just sent out replacements at no charge to me. That's good customer service!!

i also purchased the lights. Can someone tell me how this timer is supposed to work?

Read the instructions. :) :D

Seriously though, the small paper with the instructions is prolly still in the box or fell out somewhere nearby.
