Anything worth collecting off jersey shores

I found some codium. On the codium was a tiny piece of a macro algae that looked like cheato. This stuff grows faster than everything I have ever seen before. I throw out hand culls on a weekly basis

i have a friend that went diving off the jersey shore and caught the most gorgeous butterfly ive ever seen. dont know what kind it was, but man it was something.

Oh you guys are making me happy.
I vacation on LBI every summer. Heading there in a couple weeks. I want to see what I can find this year. Usually just bring back some small filtering clams and a few hermits but I want to take some time and actually do a little collecting. Wasn't quite sure if there was anything worthwhile.

im in toms river, ever gone anywhere close to there and found cool
stuff? ive always heard of people finding a bunch of mermaids purses and cool stuff farther south at corsons inlet but never by me.

Coral...I dont so but didn't really look, I did notice the other day when I was out I came across an underwater structure that looked like a mini reef, lots of life but didn't notice coral, mainly fish and macro and sponges...plan on heading back there with my snorkle gear to check it out when I can, it's only walking distance from my house

Let me know what you find....very interesting.
The sponges in my tank interest me as much as my corals do. Very complex organisms.

Save the Butterflies

It is a little bit early to collect Caribbean fish on the Jersey Shore. You'll need to wait until mid-September/early-October, when the Gulf Stream is sweeping those fish past us and to their doom in the colder waters of the North Atlantic. You might consider hosting a "seining party" (with a long seine net and enough people to move it through the sea grass in the inlets near the Barnegat Lighthouse). You'll also need to coordinate your collection timing with the tides in the area. You can collect lots of Caribbean Butterflies, and maybe even a French Angel or two. You'll know you're too late with your collection when lots of "Assorted Caribbean Butterfly Fish" start showing up in your local fish store...

Your right radiata... I have a seine net, that's how I "collect" and get my baitfish. Only takes 2 people but get tiring.
