Personally I now believe that ANY LED light could certainly benefit from supplementary t5's if only to alleviate self shading on corals..
LED fixtures biggest downfall is the narrow beams of light they produce..
The bottoms/sides of my SPS sticks are all just white.. It looks goofy and the LEDs I have are well spread out compared to a Kessil type light (even with "diffusion lens" addons)
I think it really depends what you are keeping. For a mixed Reef or even softies or LPS only I don't think it matters much. But SPS are a problem because they are so rigid and end up shading themselves.
FWIW, sps tend to do that to themselves even in the wild. It's just more noticeable in a home aquarium since even the largest aquarium sps colony is a mere microcosm of wild colonies.
