Apex auto top off question

I'm planning my ATO system, my Apex controller arrives this week.
Could I use one of the variable speed ports to drive a Tunze osmolator metering pump that runs from 3 to 12 volts, and program this port to run my ato? Can this port be programed with the signal of a float switch to turn on and off the pump?

Thanks,

The use of this port to drive the pump will damage the controller? Any ideas?

I'm asking because I know there are some issues with the bar outlets not switching off when using a low power pump like the aqualifter and I don't want to use the relay ones as ATO function needs lots of on/off cycles.

Thanks,

No, the VS ports are very low amperage, I think around 10 mA. They are intended to be used as a control signal, not actually power a device such as a pump. For low power devices such as the aqualifter, use either outlet 4 or 8 on the EB8. With some creative code, you can reduce the number of cycles needed for ATO. Do a search here on ATO and you will find pages of threads with various control schemes being used.

The variable speed ports are not intended to supply current; they won't work for your intended application.

When I discussed this with Curt a couple of years ago and did the math, it basically works out to the relays lasting 10+ years when used for ATO. They're perfectly suitable for frequent on/off cycles.
