Apex Problem

So this has happened a couple times now but this last time was the worse because I didn't catch it quick enough. My apex gets all weird and displays false info tricking my heater to go on full blast. This last time my tank got to 87 degrees...Has anyone had this problem before and what did you do to fix it? The unit is hard wired to the router. And it's saying fusion is down then randomly fixes itself a day or two later then I plug my heater back in.

Not sure what would cause that. Do you have it hooked up to Fusion with the newest firmware? Have you added any alarm settings?

Set OFF
If Temp > 83.0 Then ON
If Temp < 77.0 Then ON
If pH < 7.80 Then ON
If pH > 8.50 Then ON

That should give you a heads up when something is wonky.

That's scary. I had a bug like that once too and learned my lesson the hard way. Now I use the Apex to control a Ranco temperature controller that controls my heaters and chiller as another failsafe.

I don't think I am running the latest firmware, I think I tried doing it and it turned into a pain in the ***. But that's something I need to do is set an alarm on the unit rather than just a text message bc that doesn't work when it's offline.

Sounds familiar I had the same issue I had to disconnect the hard wire and run wireless for about a month. Then I plugged it back in now it works fine. I think the chiller was messing up my apex.

This usually only occurs after a power failure.

What your programming for your heater?

I would suggest adding a fail safe like I have to prevent the heater from running when this occurs.

Here is what I have:

If S_Temp < 78.4 Then ON
If S_Temp > 78.5 Then OFF
If S_Temp < 70.0 Then OFF

In this example, if the temp is reporting below 70 it turns the heater off since this is likely to be a false reading and the tank temp is unlikely to be below 70.

If your having this issue consistently I would suggest installing current firmware and updating web pages. alot of times this fixes 'weird' unexplained issues like this.

I would check your connections - make sure there's no salt buildup or rust anywhere near the energy bars and/or the control unit where the temp probe is plugged in. Unplug everything - make sure they are cleaned up (i soaked all my wire ends in a little bit of coke cola then rinsed with DI, let em dry and plug em back in). For the energy bars / control unit - I would just use some high pressure air to blow out the sockets. ANy signs of rust would mean these components need replaced.

Also - to get some peace of mind - switch to different heaters (I use eheim 300W) that have a temperature setting - have them turn off just over the temp you want so it wont go rampant on you.

In fact - if you unplug the heater and it fixes itself - maybe it's better to just buy different heaters and see if the issue persists?

As others have said - give it an update as well.

FYI the network / fusion problem is probably separate from the temp problem.

Thank you for the info Ted, appreciated!

Yeah my reef keeper elite if you open the back of it ,it has a watch battery inside to help keep all your settings when you unplug it or you loose power....the reason I say is my reef keeper was going haywire two weeks ago before I went on vacation and it did the same a few days before I left it would show all question? Marks all over and the time was messed up and nothing was right it turned on my heater and my fan ect....so I pulled out the battery and replaced it for a few bucks at Walgreens the battery was low I checked it ...and everything is fine now and everything was fine when I left for a week ...not sure if this is the same outcome for you but for a few bucks it's worth a try

What outlet was your heater on? 4 or 8? This display reading happened to me one time a few weeks ago, but am stumped on the cause also. Of course, it happened when I was on vacation. I've read of a few occurrence for other users.

Would be nice to be able to call Apex . But ! They dont answer their phones. You could get into a marathon email with them, They are good at that.

I upgraded Rogers to the latest firmware in about 5 min, zero issues, if you do get in touch with Apex support it's probably going to be the first thing they ask is what version are you on.
