Apex Temp Contol

I have my heater range set to 76.5 to 77.5 on the Apex. Yesterday and this morning I noticed the temp was holding steady at 75.5. I could not get the heater to come on even with an Apex setting of "On". What I did find out was the sump was low and the temp probe was above the water line. As soon as I filled it to the proper water level, the heater came on.

What I'm trying to figure out is, why didn't the Apex turn on the heater when the temp was reading 75.5. I'm glad it didn't because it would have fried my tank. There has to be some sort of safety built into that measures the ambient temp against the tank temp.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jim

I just reread your post and my thinking was all off.

It should have come on. I know I have to set mine so it stays off for 10 minutes after my maintenance cycle or my heater will kick on with no water in the sump, even if my temp probe is exposed.

Depending on your heater, some have a sensor to not come on if they are not fully submerged.

My On-temp is 76.5 and my Off-temp is 77.5. I thought it would come on if the temp falls below 76.5 and turn off when the temp reaches 77.5.

Oh, that makes sense now. It's Eheim heater and when I first put in the sump, it was standing straight up and the water level was about half way up it and wouldn't come on. I read the heater instructions (novel thought on my part) and it stated the the heater had a minimum water level. Once I put it in the sump leaning sideways it immediately came on. So, now I'm thinking the water level was below the heater's minimum water line which prevented it from coming on. Thank goodness for that!!! Appreciate the help in solving this!
