Apex UVerse Gateway Configuration?

OK guys, finally got UVerse installed today and can see the Apex via my home network. No issue there. :)

I'm having a problem getting the Apex to broadcast to the internet though. I have a DynDNS account and downloaded the Windows Client. It is currently running in the background. Even with all of this I still can't access the Apex from my iPhone on the 3g network (outside my home network). Any reason you can think of for this not working??

I also tried adding a "DNS Server" from the Application List to the "Desktop" IP. That didn't seem to work either... My old Linksys WRT54G had a built-in DNS server which was easy to configure. I'm not sure I have the client configuration quite right yet.

Is there a specific port the DynDNS Update Client uses that needs to be open? I've tried 80, 8000, 8245, and 443. None seem to work.

find your Apex controller ip adress on the Uverse homepage under "home network devices".......click on the device details tab. On bottom of the page you should see the apex controller.. to the far right, you should see your apex "public ip". write that number, and your port number on paper. Go to aquanotes iphone app and enter the "public ip address as your host, port #, user name and password....let me know if that works for ya

Thanks for the help! Still trying to access from outside the home network but can't. All I can see is the IP I set up in the controller itself - 192.168.1.50, no public IP. The IP Address Type is set to "Private (NAT) if that means anything. Here's the exact details, copied and pasted.

Device Details

Name Apex Controller
Connection Type Ethernet
IP Address 192.168.1.50
IP Address Allocation Static
IP Address Type Private (NAT)
Hardware Address 00:0c:11:23:06:d6
Status On

Also, under the IP Address Allocation tab I have this...

Device: Apex Controller

Current Address 192.168.1.50
Device Status Connected Static IP
Firewall Enabled
Address Assignment Static IP - no DHCP
WAN IP Mapping Router WAN IP address (default)

Even if I go to whatsmyip.com (which should be the same as the public IP you mentioned) and enter that IP as the Host in the Aquanotes app along with the correct Port #, User, and Password it still doesn't work.

Just a heads up to keep the thread on track, I can view the Apex fine from my PC on my home network I just can't access it remotely from my iPhone or other external PC's.

sounds like port forwarding issues or the dyndns is not active or have something to do with dchp

Hmmm, I followed the instructions in the Unofficial User Guide as far as port forwarding is concerned so I'm 99% it's set up correctly. I've successfully logged into my DynDNS account via the Update Client on my PC. And DHCP is "disabled" on the APEX Controller Network Settings.

Ok, just an update... I got it to work! For some reason there were some random values saved in the Apex for Gateway, Primary, and Secondary DNS servers. I pointed them back to the default router settings, which also matched my ipconfig/all parameters in my command prompt and it worked immediately. Russ thought the router probably assigned some random numbers to the Apex probably on install which I obviously overlooked during the net setup. Thanks all that helped out, much appreciated! :)

Hi there -- you may be able to drop the dynDNS at some point, especially if you start getting problems. I've had Uverse for 3.5yrs, at first used a referral agent but had connection problems, mostly with the iPhone app. I stopped using the redirection as my Uverse IP had remained static, if though I hadn't requested a static IP. Since dropping the middle man, it's been fine. Someday my IP may change, but hopefully would be able to fix it quickly.

Have fun!

It will happen when you are least prepared for it! :D

DDNS not only deals with that inevitable unexpected public IP address change, but it also has the primary benefit of DNS (dynamic or regular), which is mapping easily-remembered names to IP addresses. 'rm-apex.homeip.net' is one heck of a lot easier to remember than 72.199.184.221, or www.reefcentral.com vs. 198.92.103.99.

Check out the latest guide. for setting the apex up on Uverse. http://reeftech.webs.com/Apex New User Guide.pdf

This is a great resource but in my case there wasn't detailed instruction (at least what I saw - correct if I overlooked something) about making sure the Gatway, Primary and Secondary DNS Servers match the settings of your Residential Gateway. For those who run into trouble, these must match the IP of your UVerse RG - which is typically 192.168.1.254. Once these match, bingo, it will work. :)

see pg 33-AT&T U-verse 2Wire Router. when you are done configuring, you should see your new IP in the firewall status page, it should start with a 2 digit# followed by the rest of the ip address. if set up properly, you should not be able to access your apex through the 192.168.1.xx IP address but through the new ip (for example) 99.XX.XXX.XX:80.

Although the Apex has DHCP enabled, and I have specified the correct IP address and ports in both the Apex and Uverse router, the settings still show this:

Current Address 192.168.1.68
Device Status Connected DHCP
Firewall
Address Assignment Private fixed 192.168.1.68
WAN IP Mapping Router WAN IP address (default)

How do I switch that to static IP in the Uverse menus???

Here is what I did to get mine connected to Uverse!

Setting up the U-Verse Gateway to port forward to the Apex

1. Be sure you are able to get to see your apex by plugging the APEX directly into your U-Verse 2-Wire gateway with cat5 lan cable.
a. Do not try using a gaming adapter for wireless access yet, be sure you can get to the APEX in a wired connection from your computer network first.
b. Then be sure you can connect from a computer not on your home network or web enabled phone such as Blackberry or i-Phone. Ok here we go!
2. Access the 2Wire gateway’s website (default IP - 192.168.1.254)
3. Click on the Settings tab
4. Click on the Firewall tab
5. Click on Applications, Pinholes and DMZ
6. Under 1) Select a Computer, click on the Apex’s entry
7. Then Under 2) Select the “Allow Individual Applications” circle
8. Then Click “Add a new user-defined application”
9. Application Profile Name – Can be anything, but let’s call it “Apex Web Access”
10. The port (or range) should be either 80 in both boxes, or whatever port your Apex webserver uses
11. Leave the rest as they are and click on “Add to List”
12. The Gateway will then probably ask for your password, so enter that in and continue
13. Go back to Step 4 and continue through step 6 then continue below
14. Select “Apex Web Access” from the Application List and then click Add
15. Click Save at the bottom right of the screen and you should be good to go
16. Enter in your browser the following URL, Http://<your apex IP address, or port forward name>
a. Do not use WWW in the address you do not need it to get to the apex, this is where I was screwing up, it took me forever then I tried it without the WWW and bingo I was connected!
17. Good Luck!
