Approximately how many fish by weight per 270 gallon aquarium (average stocking density)?

Size/weight is only one part of the equation. You have to also look to compatibility of species, feeding requirements, activity levels, etc. Certain small fish (like some wrasse species) are like pit bulls in a tank. Others consider their tank mates as a potential meal (marine bettas for example).

There really isn't a rule of thumb that would apply.

That was something bandied about in freshwater, and it was about as useful in freshwater as in marine tanks. Let's assume a 55 gallon tank. That would be 55" of fish. A tang can be 6-10". Based on the "rule of thumb", that would be 5-9 tangs in a 55 gallon tank (or fish of that similar size).

That won't work.

My opinion: decide what types of fish you would like to keep and what type of tank (reef/fish only) and ask for stocking advice based on that. There will be a zillion different opinions on what fish to add. To me, that is a very personal choice. Also, each fish you add will usually impact what can be added after it. It is much easier to not put a fish in a tank than to try to catch one in the tank.

This really depends on your level of experience and use of tech. At the beginning of the hobby having 5-10 fish in 270g may be too much. However as you learn this number could go much higher based on what you do.

Understanding each fish and their specific needs can augment total numbers as well. For example if you have a refugium that got stocked with pods at one point you could easily handle a pair of mandarins. Depending on rock work you could have many different gobies that live happy together.

Further, the types you introduce and timing will also change the maximum number of fish you could introduce. If you go with more aggressive species first, it’ll be difficult to add others later.
