Aptasia destruction by freezing

I have all my rock pulled out of my tank at the moment. I am contemplating how I can rid myself of the 1000's of pest anemonies that occupy my rocks. The only thing I can come up with is to take the rocks out and place them in tubs. Carry them outside and let them sit covered for a week or so. Then bring the rocks back in and start cooking them all over again. So essentially, I'll end up with base rock in the end.

Any suggestions?

Hi Mike,

I have done that in the past and it works great. In fact I have some outside freezing right now. Just take the live rock and set it outside on some bricks to keep it somewhat clean, I don't even cover mine. The base rock will turn into live rock again adding it a little at a time into your main tank.

Mike, I essentially did the same thing. The rock was reduced to base. However, withing 2-3 months it came back beautifully minus the pests of course.

so Dave, if you do that, in a larger quantity, you would then have to cure the rock, correct. And that would be the same if boiled?

Thanks for the replies guys.

I guess I will get it pulled out tonight when I get home. I intend to buy some fresh rock to seed my new tank with anyway. After all the years of intercepter and flat worm exit usage. I have wiped out a lot of the common rock dwelling critters in my tank.

Hi John,

I would think it has the same effect as boiling. Just introduce it back into your tank a piece or two at a time and it will re-seed with bacteria & organisms. I would brush it with a stiff brush before putting it back into your tank just to get rid of a lot of the dead stuff.

Yeah I am having the same problem with the aptasia too, just a couple are there but i want to get them before they are all over.I just started my tank and I dont have the resources to do all that boiling my rock and starting over..... any other ideas will the shrimp work tony ????

anybody have 1,2,3 Peppermint Shrimp so I can take care of this pest problem...I guess my girlfriend has 1000000 in her nano tank I just started for her (she just told me she has a lot in there)

if you do boil it Mike ,do it outside on the side of your grill. It reeks bad !!! i made the mistake of doing it 1 time with a chunk that i got from someone ,,the wifes head spun all the way around when she got home and saw what i was into ,,,,,,the smell was bad. you would be better off setting it outside in a Rubbermaid tub and letting jack frost take care of it ,,,,

I picked up a Kleins Butterfly from Phisy Business last weekend to help with aiptasia. Was told they are similar to Copperband Butterfly's in regards to eating aiptasia, but easier to keep.
It's too early to tell, but it does seem like there's less aiptasia. He picks at the rocks, and not the coral, and eats dry foods.
Not the best looking fish, kind of a dull yellow/white/black.
Phishy's still had one left as of last Saturday.

Its kind of a funny way about removing these little buggers but I used a new soldering iron, I just pulled the rocks out that had them on there and burned them off one at a time (put the iron on and turned it to remove every bit)..... I have not seen one in my set up since.....
