Aqua C ev-180 Question

I have the skimmer set up and running, water level is just under the top of the gray box, the bubbles are about an inch into the bubble tower and that's about it. It's new clean water and an empty tank.
Is that where is should be? Just want to make sure it's normal and working properly before I put in the rock and sand.
Thanks!

sounds ok remember the smaller the bubbles the better so if you have the air valve wide open the skimmer doesnt work

about half way open seams to work best for me

I'm also running an EV-180 but with a Mag 9.5 and the 1" injector. I do have an elbow (with siphon hole) on the gate valve (to keep water noise down) but the setup is perfect for me. I'm running ozone into the skimmer at about 6cfm and my air valve is maybe 50% open. Without much in the tank you won't see alot of action but the skimmer kicks butt. You'll just need to tweak the air valve to get the skimmate you want.

If I would put a tee on the gate valve to silence some of the splashback into the water, what size tee fits there?

Rather than a Tee how about a 3/4" street el (that's a 90deg elbow that has one end male threaded)? Point the outlet down into the water. Make sure, however, that you drill a 1/4" or 3/8" siphon hole on the top of the elbow (pointing up).

Although my EV-180 produces a lot of foam and a lot of very dark green skimmate, I wish I had gotten the Mag 9.5 or the Eheim (a better, more efficient, cooler-running pump).

ab - Doesn't Aqua C rec the Mag 7 for the ev-180? Is the Eheim better? If so which Eheim?

jt - why is the elbow better, I would think the tee accomplishes the same thing without having to drill?

Thx!

Yes, they do suggest the Mag 7, and that's what I have, but many people overdrive the skimmer (using a ball valve to control flow) using the Mag 9 or the Eheim 1262 and report having a lot of success. The Eheim is a better pump than the Mag 9 and runs a lot cooler. You'll notice that the Mag 7 gets very warm, which transfer heat to your tank.

Also, regarding the elbow, the AquaC manual discusses the use of an elbow/T.

"Important! If you decide to add pipe/fittings to the gate valve to prevent splashing and/or cut back on the noise of the water returning to the sump, be aware that you must install a “siphon break” in order to ensure proper function. A siphon break will let some air into the drain line, which prevents it from sucking water out of the skimmer faster than It would normally fall due to gravity. If you plumb your skimmer so that the returning water exits a pipe below the sump level, a siphon break is critical to achieve good performance. You can add a siphon break to the exit plumbing by drilling a ¼” hole in the PVC, or by using a “tee” fitting in place of a 90 degree elbow. Leave one end of the tee facing upwards and open to air flow."

Also, the guys at AquaC are very helpful--e-mail them with any questions.

So would the Eheim 1262 be considered overdriving the skimmer and should only be used with a ball valve or could you run the skimmer straight from the 1262 with no valve at all?

No, the Eheim will overdrive the skimmer and you would need to install a ball valve between the pump and the skimmer to make sure you don't flood the sucker.
