Aqua C Remora FAQ and mods

Kaos

"Lurker"
I've been seeing allot of questions (and bashing) about Remora skimmers lately. So I've decided to start a thread to help people figure out what they can do to improve their Remora or to diagnose what's causing a specific issue w/ the skimmer. I have owned one for a few months now and must say I am very happy w/ it. At first I thought I was going to be very disappointed (and that I had been scammed by the guy I bought it from). But, I did a little research (RC helped allot when the server load was low enough to search the board) and came up w/ info. that turned my mediocar (sp?) skimmer into a skimming machine. Don't get me wrong, these mods and info. won't turn it into a Deltec or ER or etc., but you also didn't spend $400 plus either.

Skimmer noise:
When I first got mine it was noisy. I searched RC and found a thread (sorry I can't remeber who posted this or I would give them credit) that remedied the noise by taking a whole paper towel and folding it to fit between the collection cup and the pipe in the reaction chamber. This simple mod made my Remora whisper quiet. My computer fans and MJ pumps hum louder than the Remora now.

Surface Skimmer Box:
This thing is an aggrevating design. I don't like sticking my hands in the tank no more then I have to so constantly tightening and loosening the adjustment screws made me ill. There are a few ways to make this less of an aggrevation (although I haven't seen nor found a complete solution.....yet). I have heard of people glueing suction cups to the back of the box. I have thought of two possible ways of fixing it. One, would be to use the trim clips that come w/ MJ ph's. I thought of taking the the little block w/ a hole in it (the one that slides into the slots of a MJ ph) and glueing it to the back of the surface skimmer box and then threading the trim clip through the block glued to the box. This would allow for a simpler up and down adjustment to the box (I would suggest using two to help keep the box level). I haven't tried it so I'm not sure how well it would work. Another way could be to make some pontoons for each side of the box and attach them to the top on each end. This would assure the box stayed near the water's surface. But again this hasn't been tried (that I know of) so I'm not sure how well it will work. What I have done w/ my box is kept my adjustment screws just loose enough I can move the box up and down w/out messing w/ them, but tight enough that box doesn't shift.

If your skimmer doesn't dump micro bubbles in the tank (or if you just don't care) you could skip the surface skimmer box and get one of those surface skimmer units I see for the AC and Fluval filters. These would assure your pumps intake is drawing water for the surface only and never needs adjusting.

Remora's not skimming:
If the skimmer is new then it will take some time to start skimming. If you want to shorten this time then a few hour run in a tub of hot water should clean the production film off the inside. My Remora (neither do most skimmers) does not like Zoecon. I think the fatty acids in it cause a disturbance in the surface tension between the air and water. Whenever I feed Zoecon my skimmer starts blowing really big bubbles into the reaction chamber. This usually lasts a few hours and remedies itself. In one post someone stated that the little acrylic block mounted at the bottom of the tube going into the cup was fitting loose in the chamber it slides into on the skimmer (hopefully that didn't confuse you too much). This may cause the skimmer to have trouble. To remedy this you could contact Aqua C and maybe get a new cup, or glue another piece of acrylic to the bottom that fits the chamber better.

Little to no water coming out of skimmer:
Once, while doing mantainance, I noticed very little water coming out the overflow port of the skimmer. I started checking everything and found that my surface skimmer box was too close to the intake of the MJ1200 keeping it from drawing any (or little) water in. A simple shift of the box (and tightening of the adjustment screws) made this problem go away.

Well, that's about all I have. If anyone has any tricks, mods, experiences that aren't mentioned here, please post them. My hope is that everyone that has a Remora skimmer is as happy as I am w/ it. They really are good skimmers (w/ a little tweaking and understanding).

Good idea Kaos, mabey if we can get enough response a mod can make this a sticky, because yes, there are a lot of Remora questions posted here. When I set up my nano I researched long and hard for the skimmer that would best suite my needs. I found that the Remora seemed to have the best price-performance ratio.

Skimmer Noise:
I honestly like the noise, I find it soothing/calming. The skimmer is much louder when you first turn it on, it quiets over time. The paper towel mod does render it almost silent, but as I said before, I enjoy the injection noise.

Surface Skimmer Box:
I actually think it is a decent design, although I was very apprehensive to buy one based on all the bad reviews I read. With it in my tank now, I couldn't be happier. The ability to remove the surface film on the water surface makes it worth its weight in gold. The screws are sufficent to hold it, as it is rather bouyent, but I chose to superglue two maxi-jet suction cups to the back. I can now slide the box up and down with one finger. The outlet chamber also serves as a media chamber. I keep both carbon and Rowaphos in mine.

Remora not skimming:
I've had the same problem before, but this a common problem with all skimmers. The fact that the skimmer is on a smaller volume of water than most skimmer amplifies this problem. Many factors can cause the foam to collapse, from sticking your hand in the water to dosing vitamins. The foam usually returns with 30 mins - an hour. The foam rise tower in the skimmer cup needs to be kept free of crude build up also, as this will signifigantly impede foam production.

Other than that, the Remora is the simplest plug and play skimmer on the market and is very low maintaince. AquaC also has excellent customer service.

Nice Thread here. I just ordered my Remora C and have been reading and researching. I also see a lot of people bashing them and telling everyone all the problems with them.

This is going to be a great thread.

STICKY, STICKY, STICKY, STICKY!!!!

When I had my 55, I ran a Remora in it. I hated how the big skimmer box looked in my tank. So, I took it out and used a surface skimmer unit made by Fluval for their canister skimmers. It has a surface skimmer part that self-adjusts for varying water height as well as a lower intake for constant mid-water column. Only took a little room, and worked better than the ugly skimmer box ever did!! Only costs like $9 on Ebay!

I'd post a pic, but I am at work (on break). I will try to remember to post one if I get to it.

I also found it helpful to clean out the injector monthly. If you notice a sudden decreease in skimmate, clean it out with the little brush and 90% of the time that will fix it.

That's my $0.02 worth

I just don't understand why so many people (with large tanks) say it's so big?? I have one in an 18g and no one even notices it, it's basically invisible. It's made from black acrylic, which is about as far from ugly as you can get.

I'm glad to hear that as I have the whole setup coming for my 29gal. and was worried about it looking bulky in the tank as well!

Got any pics LBCBJ?

Is very easy fix to this get a MJ strainer and cut half of it off and put it on the suction side of the MJ 1200 pump , you can not see the pump after you put the box on, this will keep the pump suction intake away from the acrylic box .

Here are pics from the first week of set-up. I would like to create a pic diary thread, but my camera just doesnt cut it. HTH

You can see the bags of carbon and Rowaphos I have in there

No Flash. As you can see the box is almost invisible against my black background

BTW, I can't wait for the new Tunze Nanostreams to come out so I can lose the bulky powerheads.

Zoom - awesome idea! I've had the same problem, but for some reason never thought of that...will do

I loved my Remora on my 29g. It worked well and required very little maintenance.

IMHO the biggest thing I found in keeping up the performance was taking a toothbrush to the cup neck every week. Keeping the sludge down seemed to help the skimmate production immensely. My ASM G2 responds the same way.

I totally agree, skimming comes to a standstill once too much build-up collects in the rise tower

I didn't think to add that. But, I have always cleaned the cup and tubes of my skimmers when I emptied it. It does make a difference.

Thanks for this thread- i just did the "paper towel mod" on the remora c in my 29 and i cant believe how nice and quiet it is in my office!! Other than the constant reactor noise i think my remora does an outstanding job, and now that the noise is gone its even better!

bigmayreefer: I couldn't believe how much of a difference it made either. It was like I had a brand new skimmer all over again I was so excited.

Well it looks like the paper towel mod will be the first mod I do when I get mine, since my tank is in my living room quietness is important!! I'm assuming it's easy to figure out but from re-reading that post I really can't understand where you put the paper towel? Can someone explain a little more maybe post some pics?

LBCBJ - you can not even tell that skimmer box is in your tank! Very nice setup!!!

JeRmZ: The paper towel goes in the top of the reaction chamber, between the cup and the pipe that the MJ1200 or Mag pump is hooked to.

If you're like me, a pic will help allot more then a description. Here is a pic of mine looking in from the top of the skimmer (w/ the cup removed). You'll notice the paper towel in the far left chamber.
