Aqua EV-240 Skimmer

I need to know what would be my best solution to setting up this skimmer properly...

It has two inputs, and a hole drilled on the top of the base.

Should I connect an air valve to one of the inputs and seal the hole in the top?

Or use two pumps and connect an air valve to the hole in the top?

Where did you get that? I have an EV-240 and it doesn't have two inputs. It has the one input for the pump, an air input with a valve on it, and a John Guest Speedfit connection for connecting ozone or the output from a Ca reactor.

Personally, I would contact AquaC (info@proteinskimmer.com) and ask them, in my experience they're very responsive. I can't imagine why you would want to use two pumps with this thing, unless you're trying to get by with a less powerful pump? I don't know...

Just leave the John Guest fitting open. It doesn't hurt anything. It's recommended to run the skimmer with the air valve fully open anyway. More doesn't hurt. I've run mine this way for years with no problems. If anything, it helps for when the air inlet gets clogged.

It's a custom skimmer from Aqua-C. They do stuff like this per special requests.

Per the pic of your skimmer, the gray air valve is missing. It probably supposed to go in the hole on the top between the injectors, just like the one in the pic of the skimmer that Ken668 posted. Also this skimmer is not an EV240, but it is an EV200. The tell tale sign is the lower output is on the skimmer. All of the current EV skimmers have the output on the upper half of the skimmer (like the one in Ken668's pic).

yeah I bought it used from a guy on RC...So I'm not sure how it was setup before. I just know that I need to find out the best way to set it up for my tank! If it is the EV-200 what do you think it will do on my 240 gal with a light bioload?

based on the design of the EV skimmers, there is no advantage to dual injectors. If it were me I would block one off. The skimmer will be sufficient for your tank. Higher pressure into a sinle injector will produce smaller bubbles which will increase skimming efficiency. Unfortunately many people confuse the operation of the skimmer with becket skimmers and tend to want the same features. Even the EV 1000 and EV2000 uses a single injector!

gcarroll, that's not to say the skimmer wouldn't perform just as well with a decent pressure rated pump going to both injectors. The main difference between the larger EVs and the smaller ones is the injector size/diameter. You would probably explode a EV120 injector pushing the flow of a 1000 through it. They are indead larger for the larger skimmers. If you have decent back pressure, then there shouldn't be any reason why you can't use both.

You are correct about the size of the injector, kinda. The EV120, EV180, EV240, & EV400 share the exact same injector. The larger injector does is not used until the EV1000 & EV2000 and they use the same injector. BTW it will not explode, I use a Mag 36 (one of the recommended pumps for the EV2000) on my old EV400 injector (which uses the same injector as the EV120 but mine has a 1” barbed fitting instead of the standard ¾”) on my EV1000. The reason is because the higher pressure through the injector produces much smaller bubbles for increased surface area for the protiens to bond. There is a reason why you can’t use both injectors with decent pressure. The skimmer body is your limiting factor. It can only handle so much foam. Another limiting factor is the output gate valve, with decent pressure out of each injector, it should be easy to exceed the flow rate of the outgoing gate valve.

so you agree that I should probably connect a air valve to one of the inputs and only use the other one?

I have a mag12 that is unused at the moment...would this be sufficient for this skimmer?

i have one of those ev200's, does yours have 2 holes drilled
in the top corners? never mind you have one hole.
aie valve will not help because... the air gap is @ the tube
to body connection. seal it there & then tap a guest valve for air
control. imo it works good enough for a 7 yr. old design
you can buy a y 3/4" connector & use a mak 4 external
to run it. when they first came out people used (2) rio 2500's

Personally I would recomend a mag 18. Is there no hole between the 2 injectors?

there is a small hole between one of the injectors and the neck...it's probably about a 1/8" to 3/16" hole. So If I tap that hole for the air valve...what should I do with the other input if I am not going to use it?

I do have a mag 9.5 and mag 12 that when I first got it I thought about using both of them...but after listening to ya'll say not to run both inputs, I'm not sure.

P.S...If someone could look at this thread and try to help it would be appreciated!Plumbing Help!!!

i messed with this skimmer for 5 yrs, turned it into a beckett too
works really good either way.
running one injector doesn't work as well as running two
you can't control the air unless you seal main tube to body.(there is an air gap)
again all you need is a "y" connector to a flow control
valve & a pressure pump.

gen x px 30, px40, or maybe an ehiem 1262.
i had a mag12 running at one time, can't remember if that worked
good or not. maybe not good for beckett
